*History of Hampton : "There came also, grandsons, the Sanborns [John, William, and Stephen] and Nathaniel Bachiler, or Batchelder, as he was accustomed to write his name, and as it is now commonly written."

"The following anecdote is told of him: When, after the death of his first wife, he had determined to mary again, he resolved to be governed by his choice by the direction in which his staff, held perpendicularly over the floor, should fall, when dropped from his hand. The experiment being tried, the staff fell towards the southwest, and in that direction he bent his steps. Having traveled as far as Woburn, he called upon the widow Wyman, and offered her his hand, stating that he was going to Boston, and would call for her answer, on his return.

Mr. Batchelder settled first on the house-lot now in possession of Joseph Snider; but later in life, where Walter J. Palmer now lives. He was twice, at least, chosen constable; was one of the selectmen nine years." He was married to * Deborah Smith on DEC 10 1656.⁽²⁵⁹⁴⁾

She was born see notes. ⁽²⁵⁹⁸⁾ *E-Mail : She was "born about 1645" but this would make her only age 11 at time of marriage. Also her first child was born in 1657. She is my 9th great grandmother. 9th great grandmother

*History of Hampton : p.590 : She was a "daughter of John Smith, of Martha's Vineyard, sister of John (2) [and niece of Ruth Dalton (1)?]."

p.979 : "John Smith, 'the cooper', and his sister, Deborah, children of John Smith, of Martha's Vineyard, were in Hampton early in the later half of the Seventeenth century." Children were:
