*History of Hampton : "Thomas Philbrick was married and had children, who
were grown up before his emigration. On his arrival in New England, he went
to Watertown [Mass] and after a few years' residence there, the whole family
removed to Hampton, though not all at the same time."
*Philbrick Genealogy : "He is said to have been a mariner in early life,
and to have been master of a vessel before he emigrated from Lincolnshire in
England. There is no doubt that he and his family were settled in Watertown
[Mass] in 1636. Bond says 'His homestead was on the N.W. corner of Belmont and
Lexington Streets. Probably he was of that company that came over in 1630'. ['History

the farms of his son James and his son in law, John Cass."

retained it through life. It has never been alienated; is now owned by John A.

*History of Hampton : He "came to Hampton from Watertown, earlier than his
father; and settled on a lot, which is now a part of the homestead of Dea. James
Perkins. He and his wife and daughter Sarah, with five other persons were lost
at sea, soon after their vessel left Hampton river for Boston."
Vol.1 p.57 : " 'The Wreck of Rivermouth.' In the autumn of 1657, an event
occurred, which brought mourning and sorrow into several families in the town
and cast a gloom over the whole community. A vesselo sailed from our river,
October 20, bound for Boston, having on board four men, two women and two children
- eight persons in all - belonging to Hampton. From some cause not now known,
the vessel, soon after leaving the harbor, either foundered, or was capsized,
and all on board perished. The persons lost were these: Robert Reed, Serg. William
Swaine, Emanuel Hilliard, John Plilbrick, his wife Ann, and their daughter Sarah,
Alice, the wife of Moses Cox, and John Cox their son, and as supposed, their
only child."
*Philbrick Genealogy : "In 1636 he was a proprietor in Watertown, but in
the summer of 1639 he settled in Hampton and received a land grant there. A
house lot of five acres was granted to him in 1640. On the 20th, 8th Mo., 1657,
he was drowned with his wife and daughter and five others. They were in a little
sloop, on a shopping excursion to Boston by the easiest route."
" Hampton records say: 'The sad hand of God upon eight persons, going
in a vessel by sea, from Hampton to Boston, who were all swallowed up in the
Osian, soon after they went out of the harbor.' Among the names recorded are
'John Philbrick and Ann his wife, and Sarah their daughter, -- all drowned, 20th,
8th Mo., 1657.' "
