4. WILLIAM EDWARD4 NEW (STEPHEN FOSTER3, WILLIAM2, JOHN FOSTER1) was born 18 February 1850 in Boone Co., Indiana, and died 21 August 1918 in Iowa City, Iowa. He married LUCY A. RAMAY 21 April 1872, daughter of John Ramay and Lydia Lunback.

Notes
OBITUARY OF WILLIAM E. NEW

William Edward New, son of Stephen and Rachel New, was borne in Boone County, Indiana on February 13, 1850, and departed this life on August 21, 1918, aged 68 years, 6 months and 8 days.

At the age of seven years he removed with his parents to Warren county, Iowa, to the farm north of Cool, which has been his home for 61 years, a record seldom exelled or equaled.

On April 21, 1871, he was united in marriage to Lucy Ramey and to this union was born eight children, Edward, who still makes his home with his mother, Mrs. Charles King, Mrs. Etta Davis, (deceased four years ago), Mrs. Gordon Shaver, Mert H. New, Mrs. Kate Mock, Ralph W. New and Elmer who died in infancy. The living children are all residents of Warren county, and were permitted to live near their father in his last years. One brother, John New of Norcatur, Kansas, and twenty-one grandchildren complete the bereft circle of realtives.

In the passing of William New, we lose another of the rapidly diminishing band of pioneers-those sturdy men and women who braved the vicissitudes of frontier life and made the foundation for our comforts today. From the raw prairie he helped build a prosperous farming community, from a wagon trail, he saw developed a mighty highway, carrying an unbelievable traffic. He saw the covered wagon go and the automobile come. Always of mechanical turn, he welcomed each advance from the hand flail to the steam thresher. The network of railroads and the conquering of the air by airplanes has been his fortune to see.

In the memory of his neighbors and friends will long be held the vision of his sturdy form, his fondness for animals, his kindly interest in others. A busy life has ended, another chapter in the book of humanity written.

His faithful companion of 47 years and the sons and daughters, all grown to maturity, may well take pride in this, that this life just ended was spent in foundation building for our great commonwealth.

Funeral services were held from the Fair View Christian Union church, Rev. Wm. F. Wallace, officiating with enterment in Indian Valley cemetery.
