APT. JAMES MUNN, CAPT.:
[Munn, Cindy Smith.FTW]

At the beginning of the Rev. War, Munn enlisted in a Maryland regiment & served with Washington in the Trenton Campaign & in the capture of the Hessians on Christmas Day in 1776. He was injured at this time & didn't serve again until 1778 as part of a Pa. regiment.
He served with Col. Crawford in many campaigns & when Crawford was chosen to lead the expedition against the Ohio country Indians, he chose Munn as one of his most trusted officers. In June 1782, in the Battle of the Olentangy, on the Sandusky River, Capt. Munn was severely wounded & left on the field, as the army retreated. A comrade, William Brady, pulled him to safety as the Indians pursued the army. After this expedition, Munn retired to his farm where he spent 14 yrs.
In 1795, he joined the western migration & went to Maysville. In 1796, He took his family to the mouth of the Scioto River, making the first settlement, Alexandria, in the Scioto Valley. He set up a mill there & raised corn.
Munn & Gen. Robert Lucas quarreled & a duel with swords was arranged, but Lucas apologized & they became friends.
He next moved to Munns Run, near present New Boston, Oh. & built a house there. He then moved to Long Run, presently Burns Rd., Clarktown & built a log house where he spent the rest of his life.
In 1808, he was elected coroner of Scioto Co., resigning in 1810. On March 18, 1809, he received a Rev. pension of $10.00 per month, for his wound received in 1782.
Munn's father was a farmer & Munn is described as a tall, athletic fellow who was both a farmer & an assistant surveyor. He was associated with Crawford in surveying lands for Washington.
He is buried on the top of a hill at Oretels Corner, near Clarktown, Ohio where he overlooks the land he owned.
More descriptive info. of these stories can be found in the book "Pioneers of Scioto Co." & copies of these articles are in my files.
