Notes for J
AMES M. MUNN:
[Munn, Cindy Smith.FTW]

1850 Scioto Co., Ohio, Harrison TWS. Census, Dwelling #77, lists: James 34, a laborer, Sarah[wife?] 33, David 13, Mary 10, Benton 7, Sarah 5, Adeline3, Elizabeth 1.

1860 Scioto Co., Ohio, Harrison TWS. Census, Dw. # 1209, pg.165, lists: James 50, farmer, David F. 23, Mary L. 20, William B. 17, Sarah J. 15, Adaline A. 13, Elizabeth A. 10, James M. 8, Harriet A. 5, Albert D. 2. [Sarah died in May 1860.]

1870 Scioto Co., Ohio, Harrison TWS. Census, Dwelling # 37, lists: James Munn, 58?, Mary 26, William 25, Sarah 22, Adeline 20, Elizabeth 19, James 17, & Harriet 14.

1880 Scioto Co., Ohio, Porter TWS. Census, Dwelling # 19, lists: James Munn, Sr. 70, with the following children: Benton 27?, Adeline 26?, Elizabeth 24?, James 22, & Harriet 20? The ages are difficult to make out due to faded writing. There is no wife mentioned & David F. Munn is not mentioned.[David would have been md.] Comparing this census to the one 10 yrs. prior has them aging only 5 to 6 yrs? But has James aging 36 yrs. since 1850?

1890 Census not available, records burned in Wash. D.C.[told this by the librarian in Portsmouth]

1900 Scioto Co., Ohio, Porter TWS., Sciotoville, lists William B. Munn 49, as head of household, Adaline M., sister, 35, James M. brother, 31, Harriet A., sister, 29 & Carrie E. Weeks, niece, 14. [James Sr. died in 1891.]

Early Scioto Co. court records gives these accts:
pg. 275 James M. Munn, administrator of estate of W.W. Munn, deceased, vs. F.B. Mussey, John L. Munn, William P. Bennett. Court 21 Feb. 1856. Promissory note. [It is safe to assume that W. W. Munn, is James's brother William Wesley.]

various other court records:

notice dated 5/9/1856, lists James as W.W. Munn's administrator.[on file]

I also have copy of a note from Greenup Co., Ky, dated 3/10/1856, & signed by D.C. Munn & Lettitia A. Munn, giving Mr. McElheny permission as administrator of the estate of John Munn, dec'd. to use the promissory notes of Jas. M. Munn & W.W. Munn to settle the estate. This tells me that W.W. Munn was alive at his father's death, but died prior to 2/1856

DEEDS on file from Scioto Co. Recorders office, Vol. 4, Pgs. 242, 243, 244, 245:

1/22/1861, Lettitia A. Munn sold land to James M. Munn, for the sum of $30.00. Land located: Scioto Co., Range 20, TWS 3, Section 25, being the S.E. qtr of the N.E. qtr, containing 38 3/4 acres.

1/22/1861, J. L. Munn sold land to James M. Munn, for the sum of $30.00. Land located: Scioto Co., Range 20, TWS 3, Section 25, being the S.E. qtr of the N.E. qtr containing 38 3/4 acres.

3/30/1861, D.C. Munn sold land to James M. Munn, for the sum of $30.00. Land located: Scioto Co., Range 20, TWS 3, Section 25, being the S.E. qtr of the N.E. qtr, containing 38 3/4 acres.

4/2/1861, David F. Munn sold land to James M. Munn, for the sum of $35.00. Land located as described: Scioto Co., being one fifth part of the S.E. qtr of the N.E. qtr of Section 25, TWS 2, Range 21.

4/2/1861, James M. Munn sold land for the sum of $762.50, to William Damann. Land located as described in deed: Scioto Co., being the N.E. qtr of the N.E. qtr & the S.E. qtr of the N.E. qtr of Section 25, Tws 2, Range 21, containing 77 1/2 acres.
All of these were agreements conveying the interest of the parties in this land to James M. Munn & were all recorded on the same day, 4/2/1861.
**I find this interesting that James appears to have bought out the shares of his siblings in this land. He then sold the same portion of land, also recorded on 4/2/1861, with a tidy profit!

Birthplace listed as Alleghany Co., Pa. on death cert. It also gives age as 80yrs. 9 mo. 22 days.
Obit. lists Washington Co., Pa.

Obit. reads: James Munn of Porter Township, died Weds., July 29, 1891 at Sciotoville, aged 82 yrs. Munn was from Washington Co., Pa. & came to this area more than half of a century ago. He was a quiet & respected citizen. Munn was an "old school democrat." He voted for Andrew Jackson in 1832 & voted at every presidential election since for the Democratic candidate. With him, there was no varying of shadow or turning. He was one of Scioto's pioneers & after a long life of duty well done, he quietly sleeps in the graveyard in Wheelersburg. He leaves 2 sons & 4 dtrs.

Parents not verified at present but fairly certain. Middle name probably Madison.
Four of his children never md.=Benton, Adeline, James Jr. & Harriet.[info. from Russell Munn.8/1997]

If his wife is buried next to him, there is no tombstone marking her grave.
