Don worked at P.F.E. Shops and Union Pacific Railroad until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951. After his discharge in 1953, he and Ilene returned to Idaho, and he began his career with the Caldwell Fire Department. During his 25 years of service, he served as an arson investigator, fire training instructor, E.M.T. instructor, fire inspector, and served on the Board of Directors for the American Red Cross.

Don spent many happy times camping and hunting in the mountains of Idaho. As he was raising his children, he enjoyed coaching little league baseball and spending time with his family. He retired in June of 1978 with the rank of Assistant Fire Chief. After his retirement, he was a car salesman and bought a traffic escort business for funeral processions. During his later years, he spent time woodworking, metal working, collecting license plates, and having coffee with friends at M & W and Mr. V.’s. He was a devoted family man whose main priority was his wife and children. He retired in Jun 1978 in Caldwell, Canyon, ID. He died on Aug 21 2002 in Nampa, Canyon, ID.
