Phebe broke horses. Her sister, Margaret had a dream one night whre an angel came to her and sang, "My life chord snapped and I vanished away, into the light of another day" The next day she received word that Phebe had been thrown from her hourse on her way to the post office when her foot caught in the stirrup and she was dragged to death. The McCumsey's went from Nebraska to Idaho over the Oregon trail in 1876 by covered wagon when Margaret McCumsey (Myers) was 7 and Phebe was 5. The trip took approximately 6 months.

The journey certainly had its tragedies. Willy , at a. 2 fell into a boiling pot of grease and died. His brother Robert was killed while hunting with George out on the plains. They had been crawling along in the grass, one behind the other, when the trigger of George's gun caught and fired, killing Robert.

The family arrived in the Wallowa Valley in Oregon. They had crossed the Snake River 22 times on their journey. While they were in the process of resting and getting provisions, Chief Joseph started his famous uprising in 1877 by revolting against government pressure to place his people on a Idaho reservation. His rebellion and consequent rampage was the beginnning of the Nez Perce War. The settlers had to leave their homes and hide in a nearby fort for protection. They buried all of their valuables and silverware in the ground before leaving in wagons lined with feather mattresses in case of Indian attack. It has been told that as the wagons raced over the bumpy ground, Aramnto cried out, "you're a killin' me, you're a killin' me". And William is supposed to have said, "If Chief Joseph catches you, you'll think "a killin me". As it turned out, Chief Joseph went instead on into nothern Idaho and Montana and was finally captured near the Canadian border.

The McCumsey's then moved to Meadows, ID (approximately 100 miles due east of the fort). and homesteaded there.** William McCumsey is said to have stated upon his arrival, "I have found paradise - grass, wood and water." He died at the age of 60 and was the first person to be buried in Meadows, ID cemetery. Araminta was laid beside him in 1898.

**William is the father of Margaret McCumsey Myers who is the grandmother of Marilyn June Scribner andLanice lee Scribner Erickson.
