OPR Kilsyth 483/1 Marriage NAPIER ~ JARVAY

1654 December 14th. Quhilk day married JON NAIPPER with JANET JARVAY both in this paroch.

John Napier and his bride, Janet Jarvay, were married in December 1654. Margaret Napier, probably John's sister, married James Gray in 1653. The marriage entries state that both Napiers and their spouses were "in the parish".

In the Scottish Record Office in Edinburgh I found one testament relating to the family. Unfortunately it was a testament dative which means there was no Will only an inventory of the moveable Estate. It related to
John Napier who was married to Janet Jarvay and who died in September 1665. The document gave John Napier's occupation as an assistant miller. It listed his goods at the time of his death as one cow and one stirk or bullock and a quantity of
cloth. His household goods together with John's own personal wearing apparel was valued at Ð10.

John and Janet were therefore married for less than eleven years before his death. As a miller he would have been a person of consequence in the parish. It was however a hazardous occupation as accidents could occur relating to
the working of the machinery of the mill.
