Includes NotesNotes for Henry Walter Martin:
Written by Paul V. Napier:

Your maternal great grandfather was called "Bomp" by his grandchildren. The basis of the nickname I don't know; perhaps it was a derivation of Gramp. He worked for the city, I believe as a dispatcher for the police department. I do recall
that he knew the Morse Code by heart, perhaps because it was part of his duties.

He was tall and quiet, and possessed a sense of humor. He spent his many years of later widowerhood living for awhile at his children's homes on a rotating basis. This was prior to the sophistication of the Heritage, back when an 'old age'
home was little more than just that. Eventually he needed the care provided by the old St. Ann's on Lake Aveune. I can remember accompanying your Dad and your grandfather to visit him along 'mit Mom. But I particularly remember Dad shaving
Bomp on these visits as Bomp's sight and hand coordination had aged to a point that a steadier hand and eye provided by your grandfather was adviseable.

I don't believe that he ever owned a car, a decision that may have been influenced by the absence of both a garage and a driveway at 30 Woodbine. After his retirement the flashing of his police badge permitted him to ride the bus at no cost.

He died in either '51 or '52 while I was away at Cornell.
