Includes NotesNotes for John H. Napier:
This story is from the clippings possessed by Robert A. Napier.

John H. Napier, the Batavia agent for the American Express company, has the distinction of being a direct descendant of John Napier, the celebrated Scotchman who was the inventor of logarithms now in use in trigonometry and also first made
"bones" which are used in instructing children to subtract. Another of his famous ancestor[s] was Sir Charles Napier, who served unde[r] Wellington as a Colonel and gained fam[e a]nd eminence. Some of the descendants (illegible) men are now
famous as shipbuilders i[n S]cotland, having the largest yards in th[e w]orld.

Mr. Napier this week presented to the Ho[land L]and Purchase Historical society, to be place[d] in the Land Office museum, a number of very interesting relics, among which is a gold nugget found on a relative's claim at Delamar[?] Idaho.
Another interesting souvenir is a small piece of the monument erected to the memory of President Abraham Lincoln at Springfield, Ill. Mr. Napier's father superintended the laying of the first stone of the monument.

A horn cup from Scotland, which is with the donation, has passed through three generations of Mr. Napier's family and from this [?ief] same cup Burns, the Scottish poet, once drained a draught. Other curios are an African coin dated 1288 and
other coins, a specimen of silver ore and a quantity of peculiar little glass bulbs, which in early years were used in testing the quality of liquor. These bulbs originally belonged to Mr. Napier's grandfather.

Written by Paul V. Napier:

While I did not remember my paternal grandfather I understand that he was not Catholic, but that he agreed to his Catholic wife's request that the children be raised Catholic. Apparently, the agreement was of substance because Dad told that
once, as a youngster, his father noticed on a Sunday morning that Dad was slowly preparing himself for church. This caused his father to ask: "Are they holding a special mass for you this morning?"
