George Napier (b. August 1826, d. October 21, 1899)
George Napier (son of James A. Napier and Rachel Michael) was born August 1826 in Windsor, Nova Scotia, Canada, and died October 21, 1899 in Franklinville, New York, USA. He married Elizabeth Frances Potter.
Notes for George Napier:
George Napier - an obituary taken from the clippings possessed by Great-great grandson Robert A. Napier and came from his parents home on Landsdown lane in Pittsford, N.Y. It is his conclusion after discussions with his mother Anne Napier that
his scrapbook of family news stories were collected by Marion Napier. This is being transcribed on July 18, 1994 from a photostatic copy of the clippings in my possession. The clipping contains a photograph of George Napier. I believe this
to come from a Franklinville newspaper. Every Western New York location is identified with the state initials (N.Y.) with the exception of Franklinville. It is that omission that leads me to my conclusion.
_____
George Napier died Saturday Oct. 21, 1899, after an illness of about eight years.
He was born in Windsor, Nova Scotia, August, 1826. His ancestry are numbered quite conspicuously in the history of Great Britain. His father, James Napier was born in Huntley, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and his mother Rachel (Michael) Napier was
born in the adjoining parish of Gartley. They emigrated to Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1816, where they remained some 12 years then returning to Scotland staying about two years when they emigrated to America where Geo. Napier with his brothers
(Napier Bros.) and his brother-in-laws Chas. and Rob't. Brodie were located.
Geo. Napier has spent a useful and energetic life mostly as a builder and contractor, engaging in his vast experience on works like Erie, Genesee Valley, and James River canals, Portageville aqueduct, bridge spanning the Mississippi River at
St. Paul, Minn., Louisville & Nashville, Wabash, Lake Shore, and (illedgeable) rail roads, Lincoln monument and state capitol in Springfield, Ill., St. Louis Bridge and Water works of Missouri, Ten Broeck Free Academy, County poor houses at
Machias and many of the prominent works of his day.
Columns could be written of Mr. Napier's experiences in the west when it was a new country. He lived in St. Paul when it was practically wilderness and the Indians were on the war path. He was friendly to and with the Red Men and once was
warned by them of a coming massacre in time to save his life. Little Crow, the Sioux chief, was a good friend of Napier in those early days.
On July 6, 1852, he married Miss Elizabeth Frances Potter, who was born in Collins, Erie Co., N.Y., April 2, 1830. They have had five children born to them - three sons and two daughters - of whom one daughter and three sons survive,
viz(colon) Charles Edward Napier of Franklinville, John H. Napier of Batavia, N.Y., and George Harry Napier and Isabella Napier, residing with their mother at the old homestead in Machias, N.Y.
Mr. Napier united with the U.P. church in this place on June 5 1894 and has been a liberal supporter ever since. hew was a keen observer of mankind, of unquestionable courage and progressiveness, always leaning to the weaker side. He was a
Republican in politics, a warm admirer of Lincoln and Grant, and often spoke of his personal friend Ely Parker (Gen. Grant's private secretary) who penned the terms of agreement between Grant and Lee. He was a kind husband and father, strong
in his friendship and generous to a fault and a good citizen in every sense of the term.
The funeral services were conducted by pastor Dr. J. B. Lee at his late residence in Machias and were attended by a very large assembly of relatives, neighbors and friends from this (illegible). The pallbearers were Dr. Wm. A. Day, (Illegible
possibly with last name Weed), D. J. Graves, Mel (illegible), M. (illegible), and Geo. Hollister, from East Auroura. The interment was at Machias.
