Notes for James A. Napier:
OPR Huntly 202/1
1789 October 18th. Alexander merchant in Huntly has twins by his wife Margaret McRobbie baptized and named JOHN and JAMES.
According to the Random House Unabridge Dictionary Second Edition Newly Revised and Updated, a Vintner is a maker or sellor of wine and spirits. James A. Napier father, Alexander, was also listed as a merchant and vintner in various birth
notices in the OPRs. The reasonable conclusion is that Alexander and James owned or opperated a liquer store.
James had been acquainted with Rachel for some years before their marriage. In 1814 Rachel had given birth to William, the son of James Napier who was at that time living at Whiteleys. Rachel and James were fined Ð1 in September 1814 by the
Kirk Session of Gartly for the sin of uncleanness or fornication as it was usually called. It was only after they had both satisfied church discipline and had paid their penalties that the baby could be baptized. This took
place the following month.
