Notes for M
ARY MAGDELENE CORDNER:
Notes from Albert Cordner Nelson: "She was a very small woman (smaller than Susan Francis Brown) Her older brother, sent for her to come to Ohio. (He had a woolen mill in Ohio and during the Civil War became wealthy selling uniforms to the Union Army; had 7 sons in the Union Army and two were killed; had farm property earlier.) She was very independent and resourceful. In her 80's she would dress and ride the streetcar alone to Los Angeles, without telling anyone she was going.

Notes from Irene Kay Keller, granddaughter:
She was sent with a maid to Ohio, but the maid stole her money and did not go aboard. She took her problem to Andrew Nelson (whom Irene thinks was the Captain). He put her in care of a woman in New York, but she did not notify her parents. She stayed there , not going on to Ohio, and with good purpose, for when Andrew Nelson returned from his next trip they were married.
She had two brothers and an older sister (who had black hair andblue yers and was a beauty. She married a wealthy saloon owner in New York.) Mary had golden blonde hair and blue eyes. Albert Cordner and the other breother gave Andrew and Mry a ranch as a wedding gift, but Andrew was apparently not a farmer, for he sold the ranch (with approval of Albert) and they went to New Orleans.
In Scotland, Mary had lived on a knoll, and the grass was clipped by sheep. Irene thinks her mother was a McClellan.
In New Orleans she had her own hat shop, with 14 to 17 French girls working for her. She spoke "several" languages, mainly French, Irene remembers.
During the plagues after the civil War, Mary and her "mammy" "laid out" many dead for the soldiers to burn, while the relatives ran out in fear of the dead.
In later years she always made her own bonnets and capes, being artistic as well as an accomplished seamstress.
After moving to California, and probably in order to support her crippled husband, she would contract to clear grease wood for the orchards of what is now PASADENA. (She ADVISED HER BOYS TO BUY PROPERTY THERE BUT THEY FAILED TO DO SO) She WOULD HIRE A CREW OF Chinese AND COOK FOR THEM, LIVING IN A TENT PITCHED ON THE SITE OF THE WORK.
Irene SAID SHE SEEMED TO HAVE EXTRA-SENSORY PERCEPTION. In LATER YEARS SHE LIVED WITH DAUGHTERS Alice AND Maggie. One DAY SHE WOULD SAY, "i KNOW SMOOTHING IS WRONG AT Alice'S AND SHE WOULD GO, FINDING SOMETHING HAD HAPPENED.
The NIGHT BEFORE SHE DIED SHE CALLED Irene IN AND SAID, "Irene, I'm NOT GOING TO BE HERE TOMORROW".
signed WITH A MORK WHEN APPLYING FOR A PENSION IN 1905. Said SHE WAS MARRIED IN New York in 1849 by the Chaplain of the Lemais Bether whose name was Clease.
A Northenerr came to the South for farming and met Alice Nelson in New Orleans. Mary Cordner, her mother, had a fit and threw him out.
