Notes
The 1840 Tuscaloosa Co., AL census age brackets account for all the known children of James and Sarah (Boyd) Newell. However, there is one additional unknown male in the 10-15 age bracket. In addition to James and Sarah, the 1850 Tuscaloosa Co. census included Ala Newell, age 23 NC, with his wife Nancy, age 23 AL, and two children, Martin Van Buren Newell, age 3 AL and Mary C., age 9/12 AL. I have not been able to establish their relationship to James and Sarah. Ala would have been 13 in 1840 and could match the unknown male in the 1840 James Newell household. Being born in 1827, Ala's age appears to be too close to Matthew's to be a brother, and also does not show in Robert Boyd's Bible list of grandchildren. James and Sarah were #1395 on the 1860 Tuscaloosa Co., AL census. #1394 was Martha Newell and her children and #1396 was Reuben Newell, age 35 TN, with two children, William, age 10 AL, and John, age 8 AL. It is not known what Reuben's relationship to James was, but William's age matches the William J., age 20 living with James and Sarah in 1870. Reuben would have been 15 in 1840 and could also have been the unknown male on the 1840 census. Also on this 1860 census and living separately from James and Sarah were their sons, #1411 James G. Newell, and #1412 Thomas D. Newell. Nearby was #1415 Benjamin Newell, age 15, whose relationship I have not been able to establish. The 1870 Tuscaloosa Co., AL census shows a number of children and grandchildren, two of whom cannot be positively sorted out, J. William, age 23, and a William J., age 20. James' son, William J. was age 6 on the 1850 census, not with him on the 1860 census, and should be 26 by the 1870 census date . There was also a William J., age 22, on the 1870 Sanford Co., AL census living near Matthew.

Notes
Robert has not been found on either the 1850 nor 1860 censuses yet. On the 1855 Alabama State census for Tuscaloosa Co., he is listed with two males <21 and no females. Only Rufus, born Nov 6, 1852, has been identified. I have long suspected that the Reuben Newell on the 1860 Tuscaloosa census adjacent to James and Sarah, may actually be Robert Boyd Newell. Reuben's son, William, born c1850 matches age with the William J. Newell who is living with James and Sarah on the 1870 census. However, there is a conflict with John, born c1852, and Rufus, born Nov. 6, 1852. A possible explanation would be that John was born late 1851 - early 1852 and might have died before the 1855 census was taken. On Mar 13, 1889, Robert filed a petition in Tuscaloosa Co., AL declining to administer the estate of Hiram Kelly whose will named his sole heirs as Matilda Kelly, wife of Robert, and Lively Kelly. Robert identifed himself as Hiram Kelly's son-in-law. In 1900 Robert and Matilda are living with Sylvania (Newell) Dollar and her children.

Notes
Since it has not yet been possible to identify this potential Newell descendant, this file will be used to attach a number of unknown stragglers that have been identified from various censuses. As they are clarified and identified, they will be moved to the appropriate ancestor file, or removed. There are several Newells that appear to be related to James and Sarah based on census association, but their relationship has not been established. Some were actually in the James and Sarah Newell household on some censuses, or living adjacently or nearby on other censuses. Therefore, for record keeping purposes, these Newells will be attached to the Unknown Newell ancestor as a temporary pageholder..

Notes
James G. may have been enumerated twice on the 1850 Tuscaloosa Co., AL census. He appears as James G., age 15, with his father and family as #637. Then there is James Gasaway Newell, age 14, living with #641 James Pierson, an adjacent family based on land records. James G.'s Civil War record indicates he was born in Tuscaloosa Co., a farmer, 6' 3/4" tall, dark hair, blue eyes and that his father, James, received his claims. There is a "J. G. Newell" with death date given as Feb 18, 1865 buried in Woodlawn National Cemetery, CSA Section, Elmira, NY.

Notes
John may have been enumerated twice on the 1850 Tuscaloosa Co., AL census. He is shown as #637 John A., age 13, living with his father, James and family. There is also a listing as John Newell, age 12, living with #641 James Pierson, an adjacent family. This same scenario exists with his brother, James G. In 1860, there is a John Newell in Fayette Co. living with Martin Lawrence at Millport. The household #416 is quite near #412 Matthew Newell, and in 1870, Emily Newell, widow of John Newell is #7 on the census whereas Robert Newell is #2 on that census. John's Civil War record incated that he was a teamster.

Notes
Thomas married the Civil War widow, Martha (Williams) Snider. Two of her children, Mary J., bc1860 and William H., bc1862 are with the family on the 1870 and 1880 censuses. Thomas was a minister who performed the marriage for each of his children, except Thomas Matthew who died relatively young. The family moved to the vicinity of Phil Campbell, Franklin Co., AL sometime after 1885. Thomas' age has been a problem: he is 12 on 1850 census, 18 on 1860 census, 32 on 1870 census, 40 on 1880 census, and listed as born Nov. 1839 on 1900 census. Doc #9710 identifies two contiguous parcels of land issued to Thomas D. Newell to include the E1/2SW1/4 and W1/2SE1/4 in Sec 25 T7S/R11W, about 160 acres Thomas' tombstone inscription reads "Thomas Ditmus Newell 1840-1925." The 1907 census of CSA Veterans lists his birthdate as Nov. 25, 1840.

Notes
William J. is a mystery. The only absolute identification of him as the son of James and Sarah is the 1850 Tuscaloosa Co. census, bc1844, and living with his parents. There are several records that have not been absolutely tied to this William. In 1870, there is a J. William, age 23 and a William J., age 20, working on the farm and living with James and Sarah. But in 1870 there is also a William J., age 22 on the Sanford Co., AL census at Big Pond Pct #2, line #51. Matthew is #61 on this same census. Several of James and Sarah's sons bought lands adjacent to Matthew in Sanford/Lamar Co. in the early 1850s, including James G. and John. William enlisted in the Civil War in Tuscaloosa Co. in 1863. According to his tombstone inscription, he served in Co I, Pattersons Rgt, CSA. (A military pension located in the MS State Archives identifies a W. J. Newell as being in Co A, 30th Reg., Georgia Vol. Infantry, Army of Tennessee, CSA, Butts Co., GA, "Butts Invincibles." This company became Co I upon reorganization in 1862. -- S. Royal). It isn't known for sure if this W. J. Newell in the GA unit is the same as William Jasper. ( Research indicates that Col. Josiah Patterson was the commander of the 5th Ala Cav Rgt and this could have been William's unit. -JTN). This unit also recruited from Tuscaloosa Co. NOTE: Information on William Jasper's tombstone inscription, marriage, and birthdate provided by Sandra Royal, a descendant via his daughter, Rebecca Jane.

Notes
Sarah is listed as Sarah H. on most censuses except 1860 when she is listed as Ann. One reference has been found to indicate her name may have been Sarah Horann. At least by1910, two neices begin living with Sarah. Elizabeth Newell, age 56, and Mary A. Newell, age 52 are on the 1910 census with Sarah as head of household. These are most likely the children of Elizabeth Martha Newell, Sarah's older sister. In 1920, Mary, age 61 is listed as sister, but should be Sarah's neice. Elizabeth isn't listed and may have died. Sarah is age 72.
