Descendants of James Newell

6. JOHN A(LEXANDER)2 NEWELL (JAMES1) was born Abt. 1837 in Tuscaloosa Co., AL, and died April 11, 1862 in Civil War. He married EMILY (?). She was born March 1836 in AL.

Notes for J
OHN A(LEXANDER) NEWELL:
John may have been enumerated twice on the 1850 Tuscaloosa Co., AL census. He is shown as #637 John A., age 13, living with his father, James and family. There is also a listing as John Newell, age 12, living with #641 James Pierson, an adjacent family. This same scenario exists with his brother, James G. In 1860, there is a John Newell in Fayette Co. living with Martin Lawrence at Millport. The household #416 is quite near #412 Matthew Newell, and in 1870, Emily Newell, widow of John Newell is #7 on the census whereas Robert Newell is #2 on that census. John's Civil War record incated that he was a teamster.

Notes for E
MILY (?):
On the 1870 Sanford Co. census, Emily is the head of household with 7-year old William. On the 1880 Lamar Co., AL census, Emily (AL SC SC) is living in the Drury Dobbins household as a housekeeper. On the 1900 Lamar Co., AL census, Emily is living in her son, John William's household. In 1900, she indicates that she has had one child and has one living. On the 1910 Lamar Co., AL census, Emily is living in the Lando and Nancy Wigginton household. She is identified on the census transcription as "mother" (perhaps should be mother-in-law) and indicates that she has had four children and three are living. This would imply that either Lando or Nancy would be one of her children. However, both were born in 1875 and were not noted on the 1900 census as "living" children of Emily.

7. REV. THOMAS DIDYMUS2 NEWELL (JAMES1) was born November 1839 in Tuscaloosa co., AL, and died April 1925 in Franklin Co., AL. He married MARTHA WILLIAMS Abt. 1865, daughter of LUKE WILLIAMS and THELMA (?). She was born March 1839 in AL, and died Abt. 1918 in Phil Campbell, Franklin Co., AL.

Notes for R
EV. THOMAS DIDYMUS NEWELL:
Thomas married the Civil War widow, Martha (Williams) Snider. Two of her children, Mary J., bc1860 and William H., bc1862 are with the family on the 1870 and 1880 censuses. Thomas was a minister who performed the marriage for each of his children, except Thomas Matthew who died relatively young. The family moved to the vicinity of Phil Campbell, Franklin Co., AL sometime after 1885.
Thomas' age has been a problem: he is 12 on 1850 census, 18 on 1860 census, 32 on 1870 census, 40 on 1880 census, and listed as born Nov. 1839 on 1900 census.
Doc #9710 identifies two contiguous parcels of land issued to Thomas D. Newell to include the E1/2SW1/4 and W1/2SE1/4 in Sec 25 T7S/R11W, about 160 acres
Thomas' tombstone inscription reads "Thomas Ditmus Newell 1840-1925." The 1907 census of CSA Veterans lists his birthdate as Nov. 25, 1840.

He married SUSAN ANN BALLARD September 8, 1871 in Tupelo, Lee Co., MS, daughter of THOMAS BALLARD and MARY SANDLIN. She was born July 4, 1854 in Lee Co., MS, and died May 22, 1930 in Lee Co., MS.

Notes for W
ILLIAM JASPER NEWELL:
William J. is a mystery. The only absolute identification of him as the son of James and Sarah is the 1850 Tuscaloosa Co. census, bc1844, and living with his parents. There are several records that have not been absolutely tied to this William. In 1870, there is a J. William, age 23 and a William J., age 20, working on the farm and living with James and Sarah. But in 1870 there is also a William J., age 22 on the Sanford Co., AL census at Big Pond Pct #2, line #51. Matthew is #61 on this same census. Several of James and Sarah's sons bought lands adjacent to Matthew in Sanford/Lamar Co. in the early 1850s, including James G. and John.
William enlisted in the Civil War in Tuscaloosa Co. in 1863. According to his tombstone inscription, he served in Co I, Pattersons Rgt, CSA. (A military pension located in the MS State Archives identifies a W. J. Newell as being in Co A, 30th Reg., Georgia Vol. Infantry, Army of Tennessee, CSA, Butts Co., GA, "Butts Invincibles." This company became Co I upon reorganization in 1862. -- S. Royal). It isn't known for sure if this W. J. Newell in the GA unit is the same as William Jasper. ( Research indicates that Col. Josiah Patterson was the commander of the 5th Ala Cav Rgt and this could have been William's unit. -JTN). This unit also recruited from Tuscaloosa Co.

NOTE: Information on William Jasper's tombstone inscription, marriage, and birthdate provided by Sandra Royal, a descendant via his daughter, Rebecca Jane.
