72. REUBEN4 NEWELL (UNKNOWN3, SARAH "SALLY"2 BOYD, ROBERT1) was born Abt. 1825 in TN.

Notes for R
EUBEN NEWELL:
The 1860 census writing has been rendered by various researchers, including this one, as Rewlen. However, Reuben would seem to be a more appropriate interpretation. He is adjacent to James and Sarah who are #1395 on this census. Martha, dau of James and Sarah is #1394 on this census.
I have long suspected that this Reuben might actually be Robert Boyd Newell who hasn't been found on the 1860 census yet. Robert is on the 1855 State census with two males <21, one of whom has been identified as Rufus M. Newell, born November 6, 1852. Reuben's son, William, born c1850 matches age with the William J. Newell who is living with James and Sarah on the 1870 census. However, there is a conflict with John, born c1852, and Rufus, born Nov. 6, 1852. One explanation could be that John was born late 1851 - early 1852 and might have died before the 1855 census was taken.

73. ALA4 NEWELL (UNKNOWN3, SARAH "SALLY"2 BOYD, ROBERT1) was born Abt. 1827 in NC, and died Bef. 1870 in Tishomingo Co., MS. He married NANCY WHITAKER. She was born January 19, 1826 in AL, and died December 13, 1900.

Notes for A
LA NEWELL:
The family of Ala and Nancy Newell has been reconstructed based on census data from 1850 Tuscaloosa Co., AL, 1870 and 1880 Tishomingo Co., MS, 1900 Franklin Co., AL, and 1894/5 Tishomingo County school records. The following was found on the 1880 Tishomingo Co., MS census Dist 5, Beat 5, pg 95c:
Nancy Newell            Head      Widow      54      AL GA GA
Francies M. Newell      Sister      Single      21      AL AL AL
George W. Newell            Son      Single      20      AL AL AL
Jane P. Newell            Dau      Single      18      AL AL AL
John W. Hallmark            GSon      Single      13      MS MS AL

Francies M. is actually Francis M. and should be a Son, not a Sister. Nancy was living with Francis M. Newell in 1900 Franklin Co., AL.
There was found an LDS file for George Washington Newell, born 10 Apr 1860 with parents shown as Alec Newell and Nancy Whitaker.
Ala could be short for Alexander, but he has appeared variously as Aley and Alec, and has not been located since the 1850 Tuscaloosa Co., AL census. If the 1870 Tishomingo Co., MS census birthplaces are correct, the earliest that the family arrived in MS would be about 1866/7.
Written "Ala" 23 NC in 1850 a farmer.
From the book "Tishomingo County Mississippi - History & Families" page 358 article on Jasper Newton Hutcheson (who married Nancy Elizabeth Newell --dau of Aley and Nancy): "Aley and Nancy were early settlers of the Old Bethel Community in South Tishomingo. Aley mysteriously disappeared when a wagon train passing through broke down near his home. He went to help them get started and he was never seen again by his family." This event must have occurred sometime between 1866 and the 1870 census taking.
