Notes for EDWARD YOUNGHANCE: I believe this is the Edward 22 NY living with his grandfather in 1850 and later with his aunts Mary, Christina, and Catherine. In 1864 "Edward Younghans" of Schodack was assessed $1.95 excise tax for 39 head of sheep. Not certain if same person. Written "E." 38 NY in 1870 a farmer and head of household with Mary, Christina, and Catherine. In 1880 Mary is head of houshold with sisters Christina, Catherine, and nephew Edward age 42 (giving birth as 1838 vs 1828) Listed "Edward" 72 NY in 1900 apparently never married and was labeled "Gentleman" under occupation. Dob Oct 1827. Written "Edward Younghans" 78 NY in 1910 single -- occupation indecipherable. |

|
Notes for ANCRUM YOUNGHANCE: The 1850 census is the only evidence of Ancrum yet found. 1850 transcribed "Ancrum Lounghance" age 7 MA but state appears written "Ala" similar to other Alabama entries. Sarah who was born in AL was also transcribed "MA." Not listed with family in 1860. |

Notes for JAMES M. YOUNGHANSE: The family's arrival in Texas is not known, so James could have been born in MS but indicates TX on 1860 census. Written "Jensison" 7 TX in 1860. He and next line (Joana) are marked "twins." Implied surname is "Hance." Written "James Younghance" 16 AL in 1870 making birth ca1854. He is a farm worker for the William W. Poole family. Written "James Younghance" 22 AL AL AL in 1880 a farm worker for W. W. Pool. His age would indicate a birth ca1858. Written "Jim M." 48 TX TX TX in 1900 a farmer - transcribed "Jinnie." His twin sister, Joanna Nichols and nephew, Edward J. Nichols are living in the household. Birthdate given for both James and Joanna is Feb 27, 1852 Texas. Written "James E. Younghaus" 58 NC NC VA in 1910 a farmer and Joanna (listed as Joe Nichols, widowed sister) is living with him but indicating she had no children. His age is correctly given as 58, but hers is listed as 40. The 1910 census states that James, Joanna, and their father were born in NC, and mother in VA, which would be completely false. These discrepancies are difficult to rationalize. 1920 appears written "Young Hanc E" (transcribed "Harc E. Young") age 67 TX Holland Holland indicating that James probably didn't really know where his parents were from. Twin sister Joanna is still living with him. |
