Descendants of James Newell

Generation No. 1

1. JAMES1 NEWELL was born Abt. 1795 in NC (Mecklenburg?), and died Aft. 1880 in Tuscaloosa Co., AL. He married SARAH "SALLY" BOYD Abt. 1823 in probably Mecklenburg Co., NC, daughter of ROBERT BOYD and TEMPERANCE PITMAN. She was born July 8, 1807 in Mecklenburg Co., NC, and died Aft. 1880 in Tuscaloosa Co., AL.

Notes for J
AMES NEWELL:
The 1840 Tuscaloosa Co., AL census age brackets account for all the known children of James and Sarah (Boyd) Newell. However, there is one additional unknown male in the 10-15 age bracket.
      1840 Tuscaloosa Co., AL: James Newell; 3m <5, 2m 10-15, 1m 15-20, 1m 30-40, 1f 5-10, 1f 30-40.
      Written "James" 55 NC in1850 a farmer.
      1850 Tuscaloosa Co., AL State census: 4m <21, 1m >21, 1m >45, 2f <21, 1f >21 for a total of 8 in the family.
In addition to James and Sarah, the 1850 Tuscaloosa Co. census included Ala Newell, age 23 NC, with his wife Nancy, age 23 AL, and two children, Martin Van Buren Newell, age 3 AL and Mary C., age 9/12 AL. I have not been able to establish their relationship to James and Sarah. Ala would have been 13 in 1840 and could match the unknown male in the 1840 James Newell household. Being born in 1827, Ala's age appears to be too close to Matthew's to be a brother, and also does not show in Robert Boyd's Bible list of grandchildren.
Written "James" 65 NC in 1860 a farmer.
James and Sarah were #1395 on the 1860 Tuscaloosa Co., AL census. #1394 was Martha Newell and her children and #1396 was Reuben Newell, age 35 TN, with two children, William, age 10 AL, and John, age 8 AL. It is not known what Reuben's relationship to James was, but William's age matches the William J., age 20 living with James and Sarah in 1870. Reuben would have been 15 in 1840 and could also have been the unknown male on the 1840 census. Also on this 1860 census and living separately from James and Sarah were their sons, #1411 James G. Newell, and #1412 Thomas D. Newell. Nearby was #1415 Benjamin Newell, age 15, whose relationship I have not been able to establish.
      1866 Tuscaloosa Co., AL T21S/R7W: James Newel; 1m <10, 2m 10-20, 3m >20, 1f <10, 2f 10-20, 1f >20 for total of 10 in family. Adjacent to "Susan Kelly" family - probably Susannah.
      1866 Tuscaloosa Co., AL White Population: James Newel; 1m <10, 2m 10-20, 1m 20-30, 1m 40-50, 1m 50-60, 1m 60-70, 1f <10, 2f 10-20, 1f 60-70 for a total of ten in family. Census marks one soldier died of sickness and one disabled. Adjacent to Susan Kelly.
Written "James" 73 NC in 1870 a farmer.
The 1870 Tuscaloosa Co., AL census shows a number of children and grandchildren, two of whom cannot be positively sorted out; (1) J. William, age 23, and (2) William J., age 20. James' son, William J. was age 6 on the 1850 census, not with him on the 1860 census, and should be 26 by the 1870 census date.
(1)The 1870 census reverses many names and this could be James' son William J., but giving birthdate as approx. 1847. There was also a William J., age 22, on the 1870 Sanford Co., AL census living near Matthew. This William J. appears to be a brother of Mary Elizabeth (Newell) Maddox. Mary was born Sep 14, 1833 and married William W. Maddox. I have not been able to determine their parents.
      (2) William J., age 20, matches the Willliam son of Reuben from the 1860 census. Robert Boyd Newell supposedly had two sons by his first marriage, but only Rufus has been positively identified. William J. could be the other son if Reuben and Robert are the same person. Rufus is also living with James and Sarah in 1870.
Written "Jas" 80 NC NC NC in 1880 a farmer.

  Notes for SARAH H(ORAN) NEWELL:
      Written "Sarah H." 3 AL in 1850.
Sarah is listed as Sarah H. on most censuses except 1860 when she is listed as Ann. One reference has been found to indicate her name may have been Sarah Horann.
Written "Ann" 13 AL in 1860.
      Written "Sarah H." 22 AL in 1870.
Written "Sarah H." 62 AL SC SC on 1910. At least by 1910, two neices begin living with Sarah: Elizabeth Newell, age 56, and Mary A. Newell, age 52 are on the 1910 census with Sarah as head of household. These are most likely the children of Elizabeth Martha Newell, Sarah's older sister.
Sarah is age 72 in 1920. Mary, age 61 is listed as sister, but should be Sarah's neice. Elizabeth isn't listed and may have died.
