9. WILLIAM JENNINGS3 NEWELL (ROBERT BOYD2, JAMES1) was born October 1850 in Vance, Tuscaloosa Co., AL, and died March 22, 1926 in Abernant, Tuscaloosa Co., AL. He married MARY JANE WILLIAMS Abt. 1878 in Tuscaloosa Co., AL, daughter of ISAAC WILLIAMS and ELIZABETH (--?--). She was born October 2, 1858 in AL, and died March 24, 1928 in Powhaton, Jefferson Co., AL.

Notes for W
ILLIAM JENNINGS NEWELL:
There is a Tuscaloosa Co. marriage record for W. J. Newell to M. J. Williams.
Written "William J." 20 AL in 1870 a farm worker and living in the James and Sarah Newell household. Along with Rufus also living there, it appears these are Robert's children and James' grandchildren. There is also William J. Newell 22 (ca1848) living with William and Mary Elizabeth (Newell, ca1833) Maddox on the 1870 Sanford Co., AL census. Apparently this William is Mary's brother - have not been able to determine their parents.
Written "W. J." 25 AL NC NC in 1880 a farmer. This would place W. J.'s birth about 1855. Wife is named "Jane." This is the 1st relatively clear census that allows this "William J." to be tracked.
Written "Wm. J. Newel" 48 AL AL AL in 1900 a farm laborer. Census lists dob as Oct 1850 and married 22 years. On the 1900 Jefferson Co., AL Soundex, there is a William, born Oct 1850, and M. J., born Oct 1858, with seven children. Then there is a cemetery record for W. J. Newell, born 28 May 1850 and Mary J. Newell born 2 Oct 1858, buried at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Tuscaloosa Co. These age discrepancies are problematic and prevents absolute identity if one person or two.
Written "William" 64 AL AL AL in 1910 a coal miner. Age should probably be about 58 because census tracks with 1900 by matches on wife and two children.
Written "Will J." 69 AL NC AL in 1920 no occupation. Census tracks with 1900 by three matching children. Transcribed "Wall J."
AL Death record for "William J. Newell" dob c1851 Vance, Tuscaloosa Co., AL and dod 22 Mar 1926 Abernant, Tuscaloosa Co., AL age 75y11m11d. (Note: this yields dob 11 Apr 1850). Names spouse "Mary J. Newell" and father "Robert Newell." Note (Dec 2, 2009): This record appears to identify the 2nd child of Robert Boyd and Mary Ann (Herrin) Newell that has been so elusive. It would confirm the two <21 males on the 1855 State census for Robert Newell.

  Notes for WILLIAM R. NEWELL:
Written "Wm. R." 17 AL AL AL in 1900 a saw mill laborer. Dob stated Mar 1883 but "1883" is heavily written over a previous entry and could be "1882" due to age stated for next child- Sep 1883. Also month entry is heavily smudged and illegible. Transcribed "Wm. A." age 27 but the numeral "2" appears to be overwritten with a "1."
Acknowledging birthdate discrepancies, this could possibly be William Rufus who married Rena Vines.
