History of the Powderhorn: Domestic cow horn is the most common materi al from which they are made. Horns made excellent containers because t hey could be made air and water tight. Powderhorns served as a close c ompanion to the musket, fowler, or Kentucky rifle or pistol. It carrie d the black powder propellant necessry to load and fire the firearm. A p owder horn is tough, lightweight and spark proof. During the mid-eight eenth century every man who owned a firearm owned a powderhorn.
