He married Ellen Nora Raub on December 04, 1878 in St. Louis, St. Louis, MO, daughter of Reuben Raub and Sarah Savitz.

Henry William DOERGES came west via New Mexico to Los Angeles in 1887. H enry was a U.S. Deputy Marshall and established a carriage works (black smith) at 800-802 Spring Street, Los Angeles. Around 1904/06 sold carr iage works and bought a ranch in Lompoc, California. Frederick DOERGES , Sr., his son, believes that Henry William DOERGES was born in Alsace- Loraine, Germany and that the family name was Von Doerges.
According to the Lompoc Valley Historical Society, Henry William Doerge s died on 11 July 1937 at the age of 94 years, 11 months and 1 day. Th at would change his birthdate to 8 Aug 1842.

The June 1900 census of Los Angeles Township, Los Angeles County, Calif ornia states that Henry Doerges was born in Missouri, and not in German y as told by relatives.

The 1920 California Census, lists Henry Doerges as being born in Hanove r, Germany, as were both of his parents. It also lists his age as 71 y ears, and that he is a retired farmer. Henry and Ellen Nora were liste d as living in Santa Rita Precinct, Santa Barbara County, CA.
In the Passenger & Immigration Lists Index, Vol. A-G on page 481 there i s a listing for a DOERGE, Henry, no age given, who arrived in Philadelp hia, Philadelphia, PA in 1864. Henry DOERGE's listing can be found on page 117 of this sourcebook.

Listed along with Henry William and Ellen DOERGES are Gin CHOW, his wif e Carrie and their two children. Gin Chow was born in China in 1857 an d came to San Francisco when he was 16 years old. By 1890, he had move d south and become known in the Santa Barbara area for his fruit and ve getables. He grew them on a small farm (probably connected to the Doer ges farm) in the Lompoc Valley. (See article by Cecilia Rasmussen in th e Los Angeles Times, 26 June 2005, titled Farmer Grew Claim to Fame as ' Weather Prophet'.) Gin Chow died in June 1933 when he was struck by a f armer's truck as he walked along State Street in Santa Barbara. He was 7 6 years old.
Henry William DOERGES is listed as living with his mother, Christina, h is brother, William, and his sister, Caroline. The family resides with t he Reinhert family.
Henry William Doerges fought at Vicksburg, MS, and was with the victori ous Union Army that entered the city on 4 July 1863. After the Civil W ar, he participated in the Indian Campaigns in the mid-west.
Henry William DOERGES enlisted in Co. H, 14th Reg't, Illinois Infantry w hen he was seventeen years of age. His father, William DOERGES, signed t he consent form to allow him to join the same regiment as his older bro ther, William.

When mustered in at Camp Butter, Illinois on 9 Mar 1865, he was listed a s being born in Germany, age 18, his occupation listed as farmer. He i s described as being 5 feet 4 3/4 inches tall, fair complected, with ha zel eyes and auburn hair.

It is recorded on his July muster roll that he "deserted July 26, 1865, K ansas, enroute for Fort Kearney, Nebaska." It seems that he and his ol der brother, William, left together.
