Sidney George Batten (son of Henry Batten and Emma Beeson) was born 2 February 1890 in Chelmsford, Essex, and died 18 December 1985 in Levin, New Zealand. He married Janet Clark on 8 October 1914, daughter of Archibald Clark and Janet Moncrieff Gormack.

Sidney was apprenticed to a naval Architect then went to sea with the Port Line-five times around the Horn. Three times in sailing ships - then to NZ.

Met Janet and signed off and settled down.

Served on Gallipoli in 1915, advance landing party to final evacuation - then to France where he was wounded.
