John William SHEPSTONE (William) was a Weslyan missionary who arrived in 1820 with his wife, Elizabeth (nee BROOKES) and their son, Theophilus, aged 3. William and Elizabeth had six children in total before Elizabeth was tragically killed near Albany in 1833 in a cart accident:

1) Theophilus - 1817-1893 - married Maria PALMER (later Sir Theophilus and
Lady Maria)

2) Maria Elizabeth - born 1821 - married John (or Johan) BURTRUM (or BERTRAM)
- the grave of their infant son, Theophilus, is one of the surviving graves
at Herschel - THE OCCUPANT OF THIS GRAVE.

3) William George Brookes - 1823-1861 - married Amelia FULLER - Resident
Magistrate of Idutywa in Transkei in 1861 where he suddenly took ill and
subsequently died in Queenstown

4) John Wesley - 1827-1916 - married first to Mary GEARY and then to Sophia
TAYLOR - presided at the failed negotiations leading up to the Zulu War

5) George Morley - 1832-1875 - lifelong resident of Herschel where he was
Clerk of Court

6) Ann Jeans - 1833-1866 - married Richard GIDDY and moved to Rondebosch

After the death of his first wife, Elizabeth, William SHEPSTONE married Ann
SMITH who was the same age as his eldest son, Theophilus. William and Ann
had six children:

1) Edward - born 1836

2) Dorothy - 1841-1912 - married to an attorney named Edward BELL

3) Emily - 1843-1934 - married William JEFFREY and lived in Queenstown

4) Frederick - 1845-1885 - married Harriet BEDFORD and they lived in Herschel

5) HENRY SMITH (I) - 1847-1848 - BURIED AT WITTEBERGEN.

6) Henry Smith (II) - 1849-1874 - lived in Queenstown

Most of these SHEPSTONES were buried at Kamastone Wesleyan Mission near
Queenstown.

Mr. Holmes supplied the following details in another E-Mail.

William George Brookes SHEPSTONE was the first magistrate of Herschel. He
was born in Lower Albany on the Cowie in 1823 and married Amelia FULLER.
He was the second son of Reverend John William SHEPSTONE - his older
brother was the famous Sir Theophilus SHEPSTONE whose statue is in the
gardens of the Pietermaritzburg City Hall. His younger brother, John
Wesley SHEPSTONE, is notoriously credited with starting the 1979 Zulu War.
His mother, Elizabeth BROOKES, was killed on 19 July 1833 when the cart she
was travelling in overturned near Albany. After her death, the Reverend
married Ann SMITH, girl who was the same age as his eldest son, Theophilus.
The Reverend had 6 children by Elizabeth BROOKES and 5 by Ann SMITH.

I have an Edward SHEPSTONE, eldest son of William and Ann, born in 1836,
unaccounted for beyond birth. Then Henry SMITH SHEPSTONE the first, a baby
who was born on 21 February 1847 and died the following May. That would
account for your baby. He was followed by Henry SMITH SHEPTONE the second,
born on 23 June 1849. I have worked long and hard on this family and
found most of their graves at Kamastone Mission near Queenstown.

Laurie BUYS⁽⁸⁶³⁾ was a Contractor in 1939 in Aliwal North, Cape Province, South Africa.⁽⁸⁶⁴⁾ He (or she) was also known as Laurie Buys.⁽⁸⁶⁵⁾

Under Notes and News (about old scholars) in the 1939 Magazine of the Lady Grey High School the following is written: "Laurie Buys has a flourishing business as contractor in Aliwal North." (HS Lady Grey Jaarblad 1939)

According to the Death Register, Maria Johanna Jacoba Krige, born Carinus, died 20 Feb 1932 at the age of 89 years. The Death Register also comments: "Wegens Ouderdom - Sy was 13 jaar lank weduwee & het die tyd by haar dogter in die Pastorie te L.G. gewoon."

The death dates and ages of WA Krige and Maria J Carinus, as it appears on the Headstone, do not tie up with the details given in South African Genealogies. There is also no possibility of it being two different people as there were no other Krige's by the same names in Lady Grey at the time. In this instance it seems like the dates on the Headstone are less certain as only a death year and age is given in both instances.

In South African Genealogies, the following appears about Maria J Carinus.
(a1b5c1d2) Maria Jacoba Johanna Carinus * 29 Dec 1842, ~ Durbanville, + Lady Grey,
x Willem Adolph Krige * 25 Aug 1840, + 21 Aug 1912.

Given the above details, it is clear that the year of death, as it appears on the headstone, 1933, is incorrect. The following facts support the Death Register as being correct:
The death of a church member is written into the Death Register in the order of occurrence and there is nothing unusual about this particular entry. Being the mother-in-law of the Reverend and living with Reverend and Mrs. Wolhuter, Mrs. Krige was well known in the small community and there is very little chance of making a mistake with the year of death of Mrs. Krige. The death date and age ties up with the birth date given in South African Genealogies. The single grave and headstone for her and her husband was possibly erected long after her death and the fact that only the year of birth and death is given casts uncertainty on the dates.
