Elijah Osborn Family HistoryUpdated August 29, 2002 |
Elijah Osborn was born in 1795. According to most accounts, Elijah was born in Hopewell Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. A descendent of Elijah's remembers being told by her mother that Elijah came to the U.S. from Scotland by way of islands off of Virginia. Death certificates of some of Elijah's children list Elijah's birthplace as Pennsylvania. Elijah's marriage to his first wife, Nancy Stevens took place around 1818 in Pennsylvania. Oral histories report Nancy being born in PA along with their oldest child, Julia. Nancy and Elijah were living in the Mahoning/Trumbull County Ohio area in the mid 1800's. Accounts put Nancy's death in 1845 and is believed to be buried in the Mahoning area though I have nothing to document this. Nancy died leaving Elijah with eight children. The children of Elijah and Nancy were as follows: Julie Ann, Mary E., Susan, Adaline, Jane, David, Sylvester and Almira. After Nancy's death,Elijah and his children travelled from the Mahoning area west to Defiance County Ohio in 1846 or 1848. Elijah and his family settled in Richland Township, Defiance County where he lived till his death in 1870. In 1850, Elijah married Catherine Hauser Baker. Elijah and Catherine had three children, Elijah Jr. who died as a young man, Lucinda who died as an infant, and Emaline. Catherine died in 1900. Catherine and Elijah are buried in the Rohn Cemetery off route 424 behind the Farr family farm in Richland Township, Defiance County Ohio. Many of Elijah's children and descendants are also buried in the area. Many near Florida Ohio in the Cole and Florida Village Cemetery, and Independence Cemetery. Other cemeteries where descendents are buried include: Forest Hill Cemetery in Harrison Township near Napoleon Ohio, Henry County Ohio, Young Cemetery in Liberty Center Ohio, Riverside Cemetery in Montpelier Ohio, Rochester Cemetery near Cecil in Paulding County Ohio, Oak Grove Cemetery also known as the Styker Cemetery in Stryker Ohio, Riverview in Defiance Ohio and Lakeview Cemetery in Kendallville, Indiana. Since starting this project three years ago, Elijah has been a brick wall, not being able to get beyond him. At times this gets fustrating and I give it a rest. Then I receive contact with yet another distant relative and it gets me going again. I have a theory, on who Elijah's father was. However it is only speculation, I have absolutly nothing to prove this. I think it is possible that Elijah was the son, or somehow related to John Amicost Osborn. John was born in Wales, married in Baltimore and settled in Bedford County PA. John appears on censuses for Hopewell Township, Bedford Cty.,PA, as does Elijah. John died in Feb. of 1814 due to drowning in a branch of the Rayestown River. Known children of John were: Joshua, David, Elizabeth and Christopher. These children were named in John's will. Thought there was no mention of Elijah, another historian pointed out that many times children who had already left home were not named in father's wills because they had been given their share at the time they left home. There is a Ruth Osborn listed in censuse for Hopewell after the death of John, who was listed as "widow". I believe Ruth to be the widow of John and mother of Elijah. Ruth did not appear in name on censuses the years before John's death. Many times, women were listed by name only if they were head of the household, thus explaining the reason she was not listed in name before. A person I have had contact with, John Metcalf, is descended from Christopher Osborn, son of John Amigost Osborn. John Metcalf is also related to the husband of my grandfather's sister, Catherine Osborn Truby. So far I know of no evidence to link my Osborns to John Amicost Osborn. This is a work in progress and any info or corrections are appreciated. Email or drop me a line. I will update often. |
