Davidson Miller (son of Henry Miller and Sarah Rice) was born October 27, 1839 in Ickesburg, Pennsylvania, and died April 22, 1929 in Millerstown, Pennsylvania. He married Susan Agnes Baker on February 28, 1861 in Ickesburg, Pa by Reverend Mahone, daughter of Peter Baker Jr. and Jane Campbell.

Davidson Miller was born near Ickesburg, Pa., October 27,1839, the son of Henry Miller and Sarah Ann Rice. No information has been found at this time, concerning the ancestry of Henry Miller, the father of Davidson MIller. The family history of his mother, Sarah Ann Rice, is quite extensive and will be covered in a separate volume.

When Davidson was four years old, his mother married John Sanderson. There were seven children born from this marriage. All seven of those children taught school for several terms.

The education of Davidson Miller was limited. His only advantage to attend school was during the few months, in the winter when school was in session. While a young man, Mr. Miller learned the plastering trade, which he made his life long occupation. He would walk three or more miles to a job, work ten hours, then walk home again. His wage was 50 cents a day. With this wage, supplemented by produce grown in his garden and orchard, he supported a wife and eight children. Always an active man, he continued to work until 5 years before his death, at the age of 89.

He had served two enlistments during the Civil War, first enlisting in Company G, One Hundred and Thirty-Third Regiment on August 5, 1862 in Harrisburg Pa. He served under Colonel F.B. Speaman. they participated in the attack on Fredericksburg and Chancellerville; after serving nine months (the length of enlistment), he again enlisted on March 2, 1865 with Company F, One Hundred and Fourth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, for a period of three years he was stationed at Fortress Monroe in Va. where he served guard duty until his honorable discharge on August 26, 1865 in Portsmouth Va., at the end of the war. The passing of Mr. Miller removes the last member of the family from Millerstown.



The following is the obituary of Mr. Davidson Miller:

Miller-Davidson Miller died at his home in Millerstown, Pa., on Monday, at the age of 89 years. Funeral Services were conducted at his late residence Thursday afternoon. Burial was made in Riverview Cemetery at Millerstown. His wife, Susan Agnes, preceded him 14 years ago. Mr. Miller left the following children: Mrs. J. Shelly Sheaffer, Ferd M. Miller, I. Samuel Miller, Howard D. Miller, Mrs. Charles E. Cobaugh, and Herbert C. Miller; also 41 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Mr. Miller learned the plastering trade while a young man, which occupation he followed until he retired about five years ago. He served two enlistments during the Civil War, first enlisting in Company G, One Hundred and Thirty-third Regiment; after serving nine months (the length of enlistment), he again enlisted in Company F, One Hundred and Fourth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, for a period of three years, and served until his honorable discharge at the end of the war. The passing of Mr. Miller removes the last member of the family in Millerstown.

Davidson Miller, aged 89 years, died Monday at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. George Black in Millerstown. Death being due to an attack of grippe. He had been ill only about a week and was the last Civil War Veteran at Millerstown. He was born at Bloomfield, being a son of Henry and Sarah (Rice) Miller. In 1861 at Ickesburg he was united in marriage to Susan Agnes Baker, who died 14 years ago. Mr. Miller saw service in the Civil War for three years and nine months, being a member of Co. G. 133d Regiment and Co. F. 104th Regiment, Pa. Inf. The following children survive: Annie, Mrs. Cobaugh, Harrisburg; Minnie, Mrs. Shaeffer, Thompson town; F. M., Burnham, Samuel I., Altoona; H.D., Altoona; Herbert C., Lewistown. He is also survived by 41 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and funeral services were yesterday afternoon with Rev. H.M. Vogelsonger officiating, assisted by Rev. D.L. Dixon, with interment in Riverview Cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons Ralph, Earl, Robert and Elmer Miller and Clyde and Lee Sheaffer. Those from a distance attending funeral were: Samuel and Robert Miller, Mrs. Hiram Ross, Mrs. Mary Miller, Altoona; Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Miller, Mrs. Dora Miller and daughter Grace, Kenneth Miller, of the U.S.N., Mr. and Mrs. Lester Brower, Lee Sheaffer Haines Sheaffer, Lewistown; Mr. and Mrs. F.M. Miller and two daughters and grandson, Burnham; Earl Miller, Bellefonte; Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Miller, Mr. and Mrs. Willard Maneval, son and daughter and Mrs. Maneval, Williamsport; Mrs. Annie F. Cobaugh, Mrs. Paul Miller, Harrisburg; Mrs. Ammon Leister, Mifflin; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Swartz, Ickesburg; Mr. and Mrs. John Black, Mrs. Emma Ehhart, Buck's Valley.
