Includes NotesNotes for Zacariah E. Rice(Reys, Reiss):
Among the 30,000 German immigrants who landed in Philadelphia, between the years 1727 and 1776, we find the name of Zachary (Reys or Reiss) Rice, who, landing from the ship, Edinborough, took the oath of allegiance to King George III of England He was born in 1731 and before he left his country he learned the trade of a millwright. He was one of the few men who has left his stamp off individuality upon his chosen profession. His first work of importance was to build a mill for the separating of closer seed. The mill is still standing and is used as a storehouse. The machinery has disappeared. It was situated on the Pickering Creek near Pike land Station, Chester County, Pa. His style of clover mills was in use until 1860.

In the area lived Johannes and Margaret Hartman, also German emigrants, who came here in 1750. Their daughter, Maria Appolonia, afterwards called Abigail for short, was born, according to the records of the old Bible.

Zachary Rice married Abigail Hartman in 1757. They went to housekeeping on the farm now owned by Daniel Lacey in 1898, in Pike land Twp. They had twenty-one children, seventeen of whom, lived to a ripe old age.

Zachary taught his trade to his boys and to may others. He taught Benjamin Wallick, who later married Zachary's daughter. A millwright could also be a carpenter and he worked on the hsp. built at Yellow Springs. He also worked for the govt.

After the loss of his farm and the death of his wife from typhoid fever, he packed up his possessions and
his seventeen children and went looking for cheaper land. They arrived in Hbg. and drew so ;much attention that someone gave each child a cap. They moved on and settled in Milford Township, now Juniata County. He was granted credit for the first log brought for the church, Lebanon, at Loysville.

He continued working until a few years before his death. After retiring he traveled constantly between his children until August 11, 1819 when he finally closed his eyes in sleep.
