Robert Arthrell, "It is my firm belief that Arthrell was a corruption of the name Atheral occuring inthe early 1700's. Atheral comes from the Anglo Saxon name Aepelweald (dweller of the weald which is an area west of Kent). At the time of the Norman conquest pre 1066 AD the name was Atherwold. The Bishop of Winchester in the 980's was an Atherwold. The first occurance of the name Arthurell was in the late 1800's. The name derives from the Atherals of Withyam near East Grinstead. it is interesting to note that the Christian names from the Atherals of Withyam were almost identical to the Artherals."
