Hi Lavonne:

Glad to hear from you. I have had the same e-mail address for last two
years but our server is down occasionally. You probably tried to contact
me while I was having my computer updated. It took weeks and I lost
hundreds of e-mail messages.

I am not too good on the computer but will get my lineage to you one way or
another. Do you have Family Tree Maker or Lotus Word Pro? Probably ways
to send it as an attachment but not sure how. If nothing else, I will copy
from my text and paste into regular e-mail.

As you probably know, Rachel STEWARD married Thomas GRIDER. Do you have
their children? If not I will send those first. My ancestor was their
fourth child--Susan Carlisle GRIDER who m. William Henry GARRETT. (I have
a wonderful little tintype picture of both of them.)

Fourth child of Rachel STEWARD and Thomas GRIDER was Susan Carlisle GRIDER,
my ancestor. Note her first child was born 4 years before her marriage to
William Garrett. William was Susan's first cousin. He was child of Anne
GRIDER, sister of Thomas. Susan's father, Thomas, made provisions for
Susan and William Garrett to have land with understanding that William was
to adopt Gordon and in every way to treat Gordon as his own child. This
was official and on file in St. Francois Court House. Christopher Columbus
Garrett was my grandfather. Parents: Thomas GRIDER and Rachael STEWARD.

She was married to William Henry GARRETT on 18 Mar 1858 in St Francois Co., MO. Thomas GRIDER, born around 1874 in Missouri; married a Cherokee
citizen, Margaret (Maggie) C. WHITMIRE, then the widow of an EASBY, on 9
July 1896 and was remarried to her on 17 October 1896 by the Cherokee
Nation, Goingsnake District, Indian Territory (Oklahoma.)

Thomas GRIDER (03.04) filed an application in 1900 to the “Dawes
Commission” which had been appointed by Congress to determine those
Cherokee citizens who were Cherokees by blood and adoption and therefore
entitled to share in the allotment of lands of the Cherokee Nation. Thomas
was able to prove that he had married his wife, at that time Mrs. Maggie
EASBY, in accordance with the laws of the United States and in accordance
with the laws of the Cherokee Nation. However, a Cherokee law, approved 16
December 1895, stated “all non-citizens who may marry Cherokees by
blood...shall acquire, by such marriage, no rights of property, lands or
money, belonging in common to the Cherokee people or Cherokee Nation.”
Since his marriage took place in 1896, he was not eligible for the
allotment of Cherokee land and his application was rejected.
