Through the Kansas Historical Society and church records, Eldon Steward, family historian, located the Ligons in Pittsburg. Eldon and wife, Carolyn, his father and mother, Ernest and Velma Steward, traveled to Pittsburg one Sunday and visited with "Jennie" Ligon. She was 97 years old at the time. She was the youngest child of Fab and Catherine. Her mind was good and she was so excited to talk to someone of the Steward family. She told many stories. She lived at 23rd and Michigan in Pittsburg. The same house she had lived in for over 70 years. Her granddaughter, Eugenia Brackney, from Weir, KS was there. She took us out to Highland Park Cemetery and showed us all the Ligon graves. Also Ernest and Eldon visited Mt. Carmel Hospital and saw Floyd Ligon, Tom's son. Eldon wrote to Leona Long at Pleasant Hill, MO, who was Jennie's daughter, and went to meet her. Elizabeth has a daughter in Pittsburg Eldon didn't get to meet. There may also be a sister to Eugenia Brackney. Floyd Ligon lived at 102 E Walnut, Pittsburg, KS in a nursing home. Roy and Jim Ligon lived in Thermopolis, WY. They were James' sons. Roy is buried in WY, Jim is buried in NC.
Jennie said her father was a carpenter. He built most of the caskets in the area where they lived in MO. They went to Pittsburg in 1889 to get more work. He built houses. She said he had a house partly finished when he died in 1898. Fab and Catherine were members of Glade Springs Church. Fab was church clerk many years. He had beautiful handwriting.
Jennie asked Eldon is they were Democrats. She said she liked Roosevelt and Truman. She said the family were staunch Democrats and Baptists. Jennie smiled and said, "Doesn't my Dadddy have the sweetest name? Fabious Hayworth Julious Ligon"?
The Ligon farm was located in Vernon Co., MO, next farm south of Hiram Ready. The family left the farm and moved to Pittsburg, KS in 1890. Catherine died a few months after they moved. She is buried in Highland Park Cemetery. Catherine died 28 Dec 1890 and Fab died 1 Dec 1898.
