Roger William Oltmanns was born on a farm two miles west of Broadwell, IL. His parents were both children of German immigrants. Roger graduated from Elkhart High School in 1938. He enlisted in the Army in Novemer 1941, just before the attack on Pearl Harbor. While in the service he attended the Air Force's Officers Training School and was advanced to a Captain while in England.
Harriet was born on a farm near Montevallo, MO. She graduated from Westphalia High School in 1939. After graduation she enrolled in nurses training at St. Margaret's Hospital in Kansas City. After graduation she accepted duty in Obstetrics at St. Joseph's Hospital, Lorain, Ohio. In August 1943 she volunteered in the Army Nurse's Corps. She soon advanced to 1st Lieutenant and was sent to England aboard the Queen Elizabeth in April 1944, with the 55th Field Hospital, a unit with Patton's Army. In May 1944 the Unit was transferred to BADA Headquarters near Warrington, England.
In January 1945 Roger was in the Infirmary with a bad case of the flu. There, he and Harriet met! In July 1945 they became engaged and were married 28 September 1945 in a small church near Warrington, by an English Vicor.
Harriet arrived back in USA on the Queen Mary in December 1945. Roger didn't return until February 1945.

Addendum by Lavonne Parrish:
Roger and Harriet lived for a time in Chicago. I remember visiting them there when I was about 10 years old. We had a wonderful visit, one thing I remember most was the Lincoln Park zoo. I also was so surprised, on the first morning, to discover the sun came up in the North! This was the first time I realized a person could loose their sense of direction.
Roger and Harriet moved to a farm near Middletown, IL. They raised corn and prize hogs. I also remember visiting them at this farm many times.
Roger had part of a hand taken off in a corn picker in the early 1950's. Harriet has continued her nursing career to this date. lsp Parents: Herman Jacob OLTMANNS and Martha Katherine HAFERKEMP .
