Story by Bonnie May Parks Steward:
One of my first memories is when Ross and I got into trouble. Mother was expecting company. She had cleaned house and had washed windows. Ross and I thought it would be nice to make it dark in the kitchen. We got paper and tore it up into little pieces, licked them and then stuck them on Mom's clean windows. Mom was very unhappy!
Next memory is when Aunt Bertha came to visit one day. Her son Virgil and I were in a hurry to get upstairs so ran up on hands and feet. He was ahead of me, his foot came back, hitting me under the chin. This knocked me back downstairs, breaking my wrist. One Sunday, when we had more company, my Uncle Jess helped me up in the hay loft so I could play with the other kids already there. I stood looking out the door where the hay was put in the loft, someone bumped against me and I fell out. This time I broke my collar bone.
We moved from this farm where I had been born, which was about four miles west of Mont Ida, KS. We packed up on a covered wagon and begin the move to Mulhall, OK. Teddy, our dog we kids all adored, ran along beside the wagon. He was a beautiful shepherd. One morning he was gone. We were heart broken, and cried. We were never sure if he was stolen, or just chased a rabbit and got lost. At Mulhall I walked a mile to attend a one room school house.
My dad raised cotton here. I was introduced to a cotton sack and taught how to pick cotton. At the end of the day my fingers got pretty sore, as the sharp cotton bowls dug into them. Bennie and Vera were born here in OK. We 5 brothers and sister had live dolls to play with!
I guess Dad got tired of picking cotton after four years. He left and went to MO to look for us a farm. He bought one near Montivallo. We had a sale, packed up in the covered wagon again! My! I was glad to arrive at our destination! We went to a school called Science Hill. There I met my life long friend, Velma Hiestand. We later became sister-in-laws! We spent many week ends with each other. Harriet and Ray were born here near Montevallo. We later moved to a farm near Walker, MO. Dad just rented here. We all went to Walker to school. Rode a school bus! We liked that, didn't have to walk. Nellie Faye was born here.
Dad went to Nevada one day and bought a new Ford touring car! It was green, before everything was black. I learned to drive our old Ford in the pasture. Dad took us kids to Nevada to see our first three-ring circus. We were spell bound! Also one of our neighbors bought a radio. They invited us down to hear it. Gee! The world was really going places!
Guess Dad decided he had tried his wings long enough so we had a sale and moved back to KS. He had bought a farm 3 miles west of Mont Ida. His Mother lived in Mont Ida. She was getting up in years, so it was decided I would stay with her and go to school. I finished 7th and 8th grades there. Times were hard so I didn't get to go to High School. I would have had to get a room and stay in Westphalia.
We kids had to help bale hay and cultivate corn. Also replant it with a hoe - what fun!! I got a job in Garnett working at the Gilbert House. They rented out the upstair rooms, and served meals to the public at noon. When a crew moved in that was working on the roads we served breakfast and supper to them. We also packed their launches. The washing of the sheets was done on a board and ironed on a mangle. I got up at five in the morning and never to bed before eleven - more than tired! I quit soon and went to MO to visit Velma. She had been writing about her husband, Ernest Steward and his brother, Irven. I was anxious to meet him! Velma's Dad and Mom, George and Bessie Hiestand were taking me to Velma and Ernest's. We meet Irven on his way to town. They introduced us! When we got to Velma's we found Ernest was sick. I helped Velma with chores and milking. The next day, Irven and Clifford, Velma's brother, came to shuck corn for Ernest. There was to be a box supper that night at a school near there, Irven told me he and Clifford were going and asked if I wanted to go. Of course, I did!! That was our first date! We went to several parties and to a show before time for me to go back home to KS. He asked me to marry him before I went home! We wrote letters all that winter and most of the next summer.
Money was scarce, so Irven was unable to come to KS. My brother, Melvin took me to MO where Irven and I were married 14 Aug 1932 at George and Bessie Hiestand's home. We lived in a little two room house west of his folks. It was our love nest! Maxine was born here, our bundle of joy! From there we moved to my folk's farm west of Montevallo. We lived there two years. Lavonne was born here. Times were hard as it rained so much couldn't get crops in. Irven worked out at anything he could get. We moved to a farm east of Milo, where we begin to get on our feet. Irven bought a John Deere tractor with steel wheels. He did custom plowing, working night and day. Had a good crop the first year. LeRoy was born 21 Nov 1936 and Frances 18 Dec 1939.
We moved from there to a farm west of Deerfield. Here we milked cows and sold milk, plus farming. Can't remember how many years we lived there, but Irven heard Iowa was a good place to farm so we moved to a farm near Charles City. Lived there one year, moved on to Fredericksburg. Milked 18 to 20 cows and raised lots of chickens. Sold from 80 to 90 dozen eggs a week!
Irven's health was never good here. He had so many sick headaches. So - we had a sale and moved to KS. Can't remember the year - should have kept a diary! We bought a farm near Garnett. We raised beef cattle and farmed. Also had chickens and pigs. Irven liked to feed cattle best!
Maxine was nearly through High School when we bought a ranch west of Waverly. We acquired about 100 head of white faced cattle. After a drought one year, Irven sold the herd. He and a friend, Charles Curtis, begin to custom combine wheat, starting in OK. It got in their blood! So, the next year we bought a trailer house and I went along. Charles' wife, Fern, also went. Really had some experiences those years!
In 1965 Irven came down with Rheumatoid Arthritis. We sold the ranch in 1966 and moved into Waverly. During this time, April 1966 in Rochester, MI., I had surgery for a malignant tumor in the colon. Six weeks after the surgery we started the harvest run, Irven having improved enough to continue. Frances and husband, Jim, accompanied us for many years. We got to watch their children grow up! We finally quit harvesting in 1975. This was the year that Janet (Maxine's oldest daughter) went with us to help me with the household chores. Also on that trip was Gordon Stegner. He and Janet fell in love and were soon married.
In 1965 Lavonne and Sonny had moved to Waverly from VA after buying the Hardware store. Irven helped out some there. One spring we planted fruit trees - apple, peach, apricot and sweet cherries. We thought it would help to sell the place if we ever wanted to sell it.
Irven had such a hard time with the arthritis. He was in and out of the hospital many times. He passed away 18 Mar 1981. I have tried to keep busy. I worked in the kitchen at Sunset Nursing Home 9 years. The fruit trees kept me busy, pruning, spraying and picking. It was so hot one spring I lost the apricot, sweet cherries and most of the peach, leaving 80 apple and 3 pear trees to prune and spray. In 1994 I was climbing ladders, pruning and spraying. Then in 1995 I hit rock bottom. Started out in January having a tumor taken off my neck. I begin to have trouble chewing my food and lost 15 pounds. Had to get new dentures. Problem didn't improve. In March had tests for clogged cartoid arteries, but blockage wasn't enough to operate. I was having trouble with double vision. The Optometrist sent me to a specialist. I had x-rays, CT Scans, and MRI. It was learned I have Myasthenia Gravis. I am taking predisone and I feel normal again! I can't explain how awful my head felt! I was so weak. It is 2 Jan 1996 and I pray 1996 will be better! I don't want to go through 1995 again! Parents: LeRoy Franklin PARKS and Margaret Rebecca SMITH.
