Melvin and family moved to Mal Hall, OK in 1917, then to Montevallo, MO in1920. Melvin started school at Walker, Mo in 1925. In 1927, another move was made to Anderson Co., KS. This time they settled on a farm near Mont Ida. This became "home place" until Melvin's Dad's death in 1967.
Melvin went to work for Charley Watson in 1928. In 1929 he bought a new Chevy truck, using it to truck for two years, at that time he moved to Milo, MO. While living there he drove a school bus. This lasted 4 years.
He me Goldie Ranz and they were married in 1936 at Nevada, MO. They moved to Anderson Co., KS in 1937, settling on a farm east of Garnett, near Centerville in 1940. Their two boys were born in Anderson Co., KS.
Melvin and Goldie were members of the First Baptist Church in Garnett. Melvin was ordained a Deacon in the 1953. He spent time with the "Lord's Acre" for a couple of years under Pastor Roy E Jones.
At age 81, he still works, refusing to retire. Melvin was very good at construction. He built their home in th 1940's from his own design. It remains as sound today as when he built it.

Uncle Melvin was killed when he backed a tractor he was driving, under a low hanging roof, penning him between the steering wheel and the roof. It was one week to the day his brother, Ross, had died of cancer. Parents: LeRoy Franklin PARKS and Margaret Rebecca SMITH .

Following letter received from a descendant of Mildred "Milly" Parks Downey. We are trying to connect the following Mildred to daughter of John Parks. lsp
I just looked at some of the deeds that I have from Surry and Wilkes. Samuel Parks sold James Downey 270 acres of land in Wilkes in 1796. I don't have the deed book number but will look it up on film tomorrow. George Parks was a witness as was William Carrell and William Carrell Jr. The Surry Co property that Nathaniel Morris purchased from Benjamin Parks of Wilkes Co in 1787 was 200 acres and was a land patent for John Parks. This deed was witnessed by Wm T Lewis and Isaac Southard (Surry Co Deed Bk D page 43-44.) The deed where James Downey and wife Mildred sell to Samuel Downey a tract of land on Peach Botton Creek that was originally granted to Michael Bacon is in Surry Co Deed Bk K page 362-363 dated 1789. I think you can see where I think that there is a close connection of some sort.

A Tribute to my Aunt

Auntie was happy as could be,
When a little niece arrived in December 1933.
How do I know, you ask.
Because, that niece was me!

In the years that followed we've shared a lot,
Even tho Auntie wasn't always pleased with me
when I was a tiny tot.

She was my idol, the one I adored......
When upstairs to her room I'd roam,
"Don't touch my dolls," She implored!
Just as I was about to make myself at home.

She was spoiled, I've heard them tell;
"But I'm the baby of the family," she would yell.
"How would you like to be the last of ten?"
"Being spoiled is no SIN"!

She had so many bosses; can't you see?
There was mildred, Melvin, Ross and Bonnie,
Don't forget Lottie, Bennie, Vera and Hattie,
And of couse Ray, Her parents Roy and Maggie.

She knew all the famous movie stars personally.
Her walls were papered with their pictures; just like a gallery;
There was Bing Crosby, Roy Rogers, Gary Cooper
And Vivien Leigh, just to name a few,
There were her idols, That is true.
Her love for them was as deep as the sea!

Auntie attended her Mont Ida school days reluctantly;
She'd rather be dreaming of her movie stars, dolls AND....
The handsome Prince she would someday marry.

Then off to Welda High School she did trot,
The boys around her they did flock!
Her books they wanted to carry.

Some how school work didn't make her shout,
I guess we'll have to call her a drop-out!

She had more important things to purse,
For our nation was battling World War II.
So off to the war plants she did go,
With sisters Vera and Lottie in Ohio.

The war was bad we all agree,
But thru the strife Auntie found her Destiny!
When God, with a humourous twinkle in His eye,
Dropped Aunties Prince Charming from the sky,
Into her brother Melvin's garden plot,
From a plane that hadn't even been shot!

Child Esther Caroline Married Leroy Harvey Parks, her second marriage, his third. They had one son, George P. (probably Pleasant after her brother). She died four days after his birth. Her brother, James P and Caroline Parks were made guardians of George. George was mentioned in Pleasant's will as a minor heir.
