Poem written by Maxine (Steward) Gordon:
For My Other Mother
Now its time to think of Valentines,
So I get out my paper and pen,
And write my loved ones their rhymes,
That I keep promising now and then.
My first message goes to you, my beloved Auntie Vera;
You've waited so patiently for your verse in rhyme,
My only excuse, my deara,
Is that, my brain has been in neutral for a long time.
Not everyone has been blessed as richly as I,
When I reflect back on my life with a sigh.
God gave me a wonderful Mother, I'll love till I die,
Then He doubled my blessings, when He gave me you,
The one I call my "other Mother".
You have been a part of my life since I was very small,
I soon out-grew you because you aren't very tall.
But you are a giant in wisdom as I recall.
It was always a treat when you came to our home,
Always bringing a gift for each one,
It made us all happy, even if it was a comb.
It's just your nature to give and to share,
You surely learned this trait from your parents,
who were a precious pair.
They taught you to work from sun up to sun down,
Whether milking cows, washing dishes or working
in hay field you never had a frown!
You were my HERO during World War II,
When the WACS you did join,
You didn't get to be a mechanic thats true,
The job you got was like the flip of the coin,
It was also important don't you see?
You helped feed 10,000 soldiers who were hungry,
With full tummies "WE" won the victory!
You grew to appreciate military men,
And soon ones heart you would win.
Aon April 20, 1946 to the Anderson County
Courthouse the two of you sped.
There before the judge your vows were said.
And Vera Parks and Edward Wills your
wedded life did begin.
Uncle Sam wasn't thru with Eddie yet,
So you waved good-bye as be flew into the sunset.
Your brides heart was filled with pain
the day the telegram came:
"Eddie Wills in critical condition on Bermuda Island".
You flew to his bedside to hold his hand.
Thru your love and many prayers Eddie came home
to till the land.
Then by and by God increased your joy,
By sending you a darling baby boy!
That joy only lasted a year and a forthnight,
For God called Eddie to make his last flight.
Since 1957 a widow you have been,
But you weren't alone; you had Glen.
Your life has been full since then.
You studied so hard and got your GED,
Raised your son, kept house and sold
Stanley products, a housewife's need.
Later working in a nursing home,
Your calling would be,
You were a bright and shining star,
Caring for the needy.
On your days off your fingers would fly,
And a quilt you'd finish by and by.
Oh, the hobbies you do just for fun!
Crossword and jigsaw puzzles;
Tending flowers in the sun,
Making and collecting dolls keep you on the run.
Placing stamps, coins and photos in albums
look nice when you are done!
On Sundays you'll be at Fist Baptist in your pew,
Singing and praying, your faith to renew.
The Lord loves you, let me tell you!
Now, my "other Mother", as I bring this to a close,
I'd like to hand you a rose,
You have been my inspiration in your
quiet and gentle way.
You have been my baby sitter,
My cake baker,
My dress fitter,
My Quilt maker,
My shoulder to cry on,
The list goes on and on,
It makes me very glad,
Because you treat me like the daughter
you never had.
I'll love you forever, and take care
of you when you are old.
Now that the story of your life has been told!
