bulletCatherine REED. George formed a wagon train and traveled to Indiana from NC in 1815. He grought a slave, Moses, inherited from his father. During the trip, all their possessions went to the bottom of the Ohio River when the ferry sank. Divers were hired to recover their things. One was a hunting knofe George carried through the Rev War, then used it for killing bear in the Indiana Wilderness.
George's body was first buried in a little cemetery on his land at the edge of Ellettsville. It was later moved to the Presbyterian cemetery. His grave is the only one having a double burial. His grandson, Perry Parks, was buried with him.
George's service in the Rev War qualified him for a grant of bounty land. He was issued Warrent #53670-160-55. This indicates that he was to receive 160 acres of land, probably in some new territory. George probably chose his land in Indiana.'
George wrote a letter, dated 1815 and postmarked "Salem, I>T>" to Ambrose Parks, in Burke Co., NC. It tells Ambrose that he has received the horse that Ambrose "sent back", but the horse was lame, but not make anything big out of that. The letter sent greetings to "Brother Samuel and to Josiah (Josias) Baker" George' daughter, Nancy, married Josiah Baker and moved to Indiana with first cousin, Ambrose and wife, Eliza in 1816.
George is listed as "George I" on census records in Monroe Co. IN. His nephew, George, son of Samuel Lined Parks, is listed as "George II", this was done so census recorders could denote they were not father and son.
