Edna Mae STEWARD (photo) was born on
31 May 1914 in Vernon Co., MO. Story by Edna Mae Steward Jones 10 Oct 1998
I don't know just how to start this. When I was a little girl, we didn't have
all these things they have now. We thought up our own games and things to do.
I always helped on the farm, by working in the fields and milked cows. I got
up early to do all this before time to go to school. We didn't have buses to
ride, we walked to school.
I helped plow wheat ground and helped cultivate corn.
When I was 12 years old we had a revival meeting at Glade Springs Church. I
was saved in that meeting. So I hope those that haven't been saved will find
a place to be saved before Jesus comes back.
I hope this will be Okay.

have been 5 May 1859 She was buried in Dec 1879 in Cedar co., Mo. She died
on 23 Dec 1879 in Cedar co., Mo. Story told by Eldon Steward (as told to him
by Tom Crawford)
Tom Crawford had dated Eliza Jane a few times. His family left Missouri and
went to Arizona. After 2 and a half years Tom said "I'm going back to Cedar
County and marry that Steward girl." When he arrived he learned Eliza Jane
was dead. She had married Thomas Beckley and died in child birth and was already
buried. She was 20 years old and buried beside her infant son.
Edna Mae Steward Jones said Eliza Jane stayed at Obediah's and would get mad
if the men didn't come for dinner on time after she set the table. Another version
on the story is that the men would get mad if the meal wasn't ready when they
came to eat, so Eliza Jane would set the table so they would believe the meal
was ready.

Frances
Elaine STEWARD (photo) was born on 18 Dec
1939 in Vernon Co., MO. Story by Frances Elaine Steward Black, June 1998
My Story:
Why am I writing this story? Because my sister, Lavonne Steward Parrish told
me I had to.
I entered this life 18 Dec 1939, that already tells you I am in that group
they call "Middle Aged". But, life is good!
We moved to KS in 1944 from Iowa, that is about my first memory. Although
I do remember some things in Iowa. Our dog had to be put down because he bit
me in the face. (That happened in Deerfield, MO. lsp) But, I had pulled his tail.
He was hard hearing and had not heard me come up behind him.
I had a pet lamb in Iowa. He played "Hid and Seek" with me. I
fell in the horse tank two times. Scared my mom when I went to sleep in the
car one day, and she didn't know where I was.
When we moved to KS I stayed with my Grandpa and Grandma Parks for six weeks
while my folks moved. My brother, LeRoy also stayed there. He helped Grandpa
and got paid. I helped Grandma gather eggs and she paid my 87 cents, as I recall.
We had bought a farm but the people hadn't moved out of the house so we rented
a house or more like a shack. We were at this house at Christmas time. The
house was small and my sister, Maxine's bed was in the living room, so I slept
with her on Christmas so I could see Santa. Wouldn't you know it, I fell asleep
and missed the Old Guy!
There are alot of memories at the place 1/2 mile east of Iantha school house
where I first went to school. My mind just wants to put all those memories down
but there is not enough space. We played soft ball and went around to other
schools. I remember my first boy friend there. The teacher, Mrs Gifford, brought
us ice cream bars out from Garnett in dry ice.
We moved to Waverly during my 6th grade year. Boy, was that different.
Only had 2 grades in one room instead of all 8.
In Dec 1956, during my senior year of high school, I started dating Jim
Black. Graduated high school at Waverly, KS in 1957, in a class of 18 students.
After graduation, I went to work at Hallmark Card Company in Topeka. What
a change! A small town girl in the Big City! Roomed with two other girls. Walked
16 blocks to work, because I was scared to ride the bus.
Jim and I were married 17 Nov 1957. Moved to Lawrence, KS where he worked
for Hallmark as a machine "sit up". We moved to Burlington, KS one
year later, as Jim was from Burlington.
Oh, My!! Where do I go from here?
We had our first child in 1960, another one in 1961 and another in 1964.
We raced horses among a dozen other things. When Carmen was two and a half
we started custom harvesting, going with my mother and dad. We did this for
nine years. Dad sold his share of the business to another man, we went two more
years with this man.
To sum this up, I worked after the children got in school. Worked in an
upholstrey shop for awhile. Worked in a flower shop, then in 1981 started my
own flower shop in partnership with a friend. We sold that shop in 1986, and
I rested for a year! Flowers are my love, so went back to work in a shop in
Burlington. After three years, in 1992, I bought that one. Last year, 1997,
I sold it to one of the ladies that worked for me. I needed some time for myself,
instead of working six days a week. I work for her three days a week.
There is so much I could put in here, but Lavonne probably meant a story
not a book.
Do want to say our family sure does miss my beloved dad and more recently
my beloved sister, Maxine. They were two of the best. I thank God for allowing
me to be born into a very loving family. God has shown us alot of love and grace.
It doesn't get any better than that.
Well that is my story and I am sticking to it!
After thought--------
As all my family knows I am very overweight. Have struggled with this
most of my life. But, there is something in everyone's life to struggle with.
Who knows what I would have been if I were thin. God knows what we have need
of and he always takes lemons and makes lemonaide. I hope at sometime in your
life I have been able to be something sweet to you.

My Special Grandpa: ( A poem written by Rebecca "Becky" Arnold, great
niece of Irven)
He was a special man to me,
A kinda' Grandpa you see.
In days of yesteryear
When I was a young lass,
My grandpa was here at last!
To young eyes, he was the same
As a brother with like name.
As years would come and go,
I soon began to tell
He wasn't only my grandpa - no!
He was my great uncle as well.
Still, through the years he remained
My kinda' grandpa just the same!
Early morning sunrise he'd greet
With beating of whisk and bowl
Mixing for you his breakfast treat,
A Steward serving of french toast.
His hands were weathered from toil,
Of years in golden wheat fields
Turning grain and earthen soil
Into sometimes profitable yields.
With a wife to stand by his side,
He traveled the country far and wide
To help family, kith and kin,
No matter what jam they were in.
Now that he's gone, my heart is sad
Because no one can replace
That spot my kinda' grandpa had.

James
STEWARD(58) was born in 1820 in St
Frances Co., MO. He died in 1861 in Poplar Bluff, MO.
(59)
Other story which is said to be untrue was that James went off to Pike's Peak
and never returned. Children were said to have been raised by Grandmothers Lane
and Spoon (since Melinda died shortly after Jesse was born). Also something
about being raised with Steward cousins including Obediah. There may be some
truth to the later. A note from Elsie Ivie Steward says "Mother died when
Jesse was a baby. Grandmothers raised the children till they came to Arkansas
to their aunt, Mrs. Burgess Thomason" "All born in MO. All came to
Lawrence Co. before fighting comes...in Civil War". Have been told that
Andrew Jackson came first and Jesse came as soon as he was old enough. Both
Andrew Jackson and Jesse are in the 1870 census. A Mariah Fox married to Jefferson
Fox was found in the 1870 Randolph Co., AR census. Lizzy not located in census
records.
James was said to have died when his horse slipped and fell on him while crossing
a bridge, near Poplar Bluff, MO. He had been to AR to visit with Jack and Jesse.
It is said that he is buried there by the road side, where his horse fell.

Jim lived in Lawrence County, MO. Dick Steward visited Jim and Mollie in Lawrence
Co., MO in 1923. Jim moved to WY date unknown and died there.
James was called Uncle Jim by all. Uncle Jim was a member to the Confederate
Army . He served under General Price for two years of the Civil War. He had
many stories in his later years, but he would never admit that the South had
lost the war. He told about one soldier who took a little Negro boy with him
to war. Uncle Jim told of the little fellow on a mule following the Confederate
cavaryman into battle.
James married Elizabeth Allen and raised a large family. After she died he married
a second time but it did not last long.
James died at the home of his son Hiram J Steward on Owl Creek, WY. He is buried
in the Monument Hill Cemetery, known by some as the Steward Flats. Eldon Steward,
who visited the site, states it is on top of a mountain and very flat, so he
could see how it got it's name. lsp Parents: Jesse Foster

Jamie was called "Pat".
"Told to me, Marilyn Steward Dowell, by Jamie "Pat" Steward:
Jesse and brother Sam Steward were in Paul's Valley, OK. They were doing well
raising hogs but eventually the hogs got cholera and died. Jesse and Sam then
went by horseback to WY to look for land to homestead. Jesse found a good Section,
160 acres, with water rights where he settled. Sam was not as impressed with
WY and returned to OK, where he settled. Sallie Steward taught school in Wichita
Falls, TX and Pat thought that she taught in Sherman, TX also. We believe that
Sallie was teaching school and that Jesse's children by his deceased wife, Cora
Alice Hill, were Sallie's students (Maybe only Clarence as he was 8 when they
married).
After Jesse died in WY, Sallie raised hogs herself. she had them shipped to
St. Louis, MO as that was the main market for them at that time.
Jesse Foster Steward died of a heart attack at home; Sallie died of Coronary
Sclerosis due to fracture of left femur; Everett died of Lockjaw due to an axe
cut on his knee; aubrey died of cancer; Jesse "Jay" died from a fall

A Poem written by Alice Harvard for Pat Steward about Jesse Foster STeward
The Laughter
Grandfather Steward would mop at his eye;
His stomach would nhake and he'd lie down and cry;
As laughing aloud till you thought he was ill
He'd chuckle and snort and blow fit to kill.
"I'm tickled", he'd say as he blew his red nose,
And straightening his vert, and the rest of his clothes,
He'd start in again, with a clap on his thigh,
And punch in the ribs the first child who went by.
"To be--Ho! Ho! -- tickled", he'd bellow and shout,
"Ain't no sin -- I can't see what the worry's about."
Convulsions like his were worth going to see;
And nothing could stop him, -- not even could he.
In perfect delight, and groaning with joy
He'd laugh till he'd done, and then like a boy
He'd tell us the joke, if a joke it had been;
But we'd already laughed, and couldn't again.
