Mae is about 5' 5" tall and medium weight. she has dark brown hair and dark brown eyes.
Mae went to CA from OR in 1923 to live with her Aunt Alice and Uncle Bob Ford, in order to attend High School. She met Jay while living in Long Beach. amma Lee, Jay's sister, invited Mae to go to a dance with her and it was there she met Jay."

From letter 2-21-00 written on Internet by Marilyn Dowell.
My dad, Jesse J. Steward, was raised in Thermopolis and moved to Bellflower, California (southern Calif.) and most all of his brothers also moved to Bellflower (to work in the oil fields in nearby Long Beach). Eleanor and her family eventually moved to Bellflower also when I was about 7. At one time we also had one of dad's cousins move next door to us - they eventually returned to Thermopolis. At any rate, we had lots of family near us. As a child I had never heard of family being in Missouri. My dad had never been there. That was "far east" to us - we were westerners. All our Steward men worked in the oil fields at one time or another. Dad was killed in a fall in 1946. Parents: Jesse Foster STEWARD and Sally Jean BROOKS.

Clayton Foster STEWARD stated that John R. STEWARD moved to TX and worked for the city of Dallas. His pay check was always made out to STEWART. John finally gave up and changed the spelling to STEWART. Clayton researched the family in the early 1980s. He found that the correct spelling was with a D, at that time he changed the spelling of his name back to STEWARD.
"John R. Steward, born in 1850. Clayton Steward, his grandson, says his name is John Henry Steward. He is listed as a farm laborer in census in 1870 at his mother's. Obe Steward said John stated he couldn't make any money in MO, so he was going to TX. In 1878, he and his wife signed a Quick-claim deed on Jesse Steward's farm. They were living in Fannin Co. TX John Steward married Emma Wilson. His grandson said they farmed near Ft. Worth, TX. He said they farmed where the Dallas-Ft. Worth Airport is now. John and Emma raised four children. Jesse Foster Steward, William "Bill" Steward, John and a daughter, Ada. Clayton Steward came to Ernest Steward's home in 1980. I was the only one there and I visited with him. That was probably one of the reasons for me to start on the family history. Clayton has been to all three reunions. Last year, we had thirteen Stewards from Ft. Worth, TX. Clayton, Sam, Lois, and Dena Mae are Jesse Foster Steward's (John R. Steward's son) children. John Steward died in 1885 at a young age of 35. He is buried at Smithfield Cemetery, Keller, TX. bullet Joyce Lavonne STEWARD (photo) was born on 7 Jul 1935 in Vernon Co., MO.

I, Lavonne, was born during "The Great Depression" on a farm in West MO. My first memory was of Christmas when I was 2 1/2 years old. My sister, Maxine, and I were ill with whooping cough and measles. My dad had been ill also with mumps (I believe it was). He went to the sale barn anyway and sold a calf. With the money he bought Christmas for us girls. Our big present was a Red wagon. Maxine couldn't get out of bed as she was so ill. Her eyes were swollen shut and couldn't see the wagon. I pulled it to the bed and put the tongue into her hand.
Another first memory was when I injured my throat. It was probably the summer I was 3. I had a long stick, I bit on one end and went round and round, making a hole in the ground. The stick slipped and jabbed the back of my throat. The rest mom tells, about me coming to the door with blood streaming out of my mouth.
We moved to a farm near Deerfield, MO before I was in first grade. I remember my years here very well, and starting to school, which was a two room school in town. The teachers were husband and wife. The wife was my teacher, but I liked the husband better. He called me "Johnny Pumphandle". We had to wash our hands at a pitcher pump in the yard. I loved to do the pumping, but due to being small I had to jump to make it pump. He even gave me a Valentine addressed to "Johnny Pumphandle". I felt very special!
I remember a girl in my class had head lice. I did not know what head lice was. My mother was horrified to learn I'd used the girl's comb upon her return to school. (She learned everything I did, because of my older sister, Maxine!)
We moved to Iowa during my first year. I remember being very sick on the trip. We arrived in style, and met our new neighbors, the Cummings, who became life long friends. Maxine and I were rushed off to school the next couple of days. It was in town, Calwell. I remember the terror of the new school. The first day, it was discovered the reason I had been so sick on the trip up, was that I had the chickenpox! The principal decided to drive me home, but wasn't sure where we lived, and I sure didn't know. He stopped to ask a neighbor, and I got out and ran down the snow covered road. The principal and the guy had to chase me! Both assured me they would find my mother!
During my third grade we moved to KS. I finished grade school at Iantha, a one room school house 12 mile west and north of Garnett, KS. I attended two years of High School at Garnett, then we moved to a ranch 3 1/2 miles west of Waverly, KS. After Graduation in 1953, I went to Oklahoma City, where I lived with Aunt Faye and worked at the First National Bank. I met Sonny in 1955 one night in down town OK City. A bunch of us girls would "cruise Main", and wave at the boys. We pulled up beside a car at a red stop light. I said "Hi" to an Airman in the next car. The car followed us to a Drive-in soda shop. The Airman and I were married in 1956 in VA, where he had been born and raised. We lived in VA. for 10 years. Our daughter was born there in 1957.
We moved to Waverly, KS in 1965 to become the owners of the hardware store. Our son, Chip was born while we were living there on a 6 acre plot 1 mile west and 1/2 south of town.
Business begin to go bad after 7 years, we sold to the local retired banker, and Sonny took a job with a Hardware Wholesaler. They moved us to Pueblo, Co. in 1972. Our children grew up here. Bonnie Jeanne met Harold Dean Betts, married and moved to Amarillo, TX. Sonny and I were Area Reps for Youth for Understanding during this time. Enjoyed many happy hours working with the students, both American and foreign. We were host parents to 8 girls during that time.
Sonny and I were divorced in Jan 1985. Chip and I moved back to Waverly and lived with mom, while I worked at Wolf Creek Nuclear Power Plant and Chip finished High School.
Sonny and I both married others following our divorce. Neither of the marriages worked out. He and I met again when our granddaughter was born in 1989. We remarried 26 Oct 1989 in Amarillo, TX. I started college in January 1990. During that time I worked as a waitress and cleaned houses.
Chip met and married Yvette Thompson Ayers. She had three darling children that we claim as our very own grandchildren, even to this day, although Chip and Yvette are divorced. Chip graduated as a Paramedic, but is back in college, to obtain a degree in nursing. (addendum: Chip graduated May 1999, and is working as an RN in Tulsa, OK in St. Francis' Hospital's CICU. He lives in Bartlesville)
I graduated with a nursing degree 14 Dec 1995. I presently work for Northwest Texas Hospital, in the Pavilion, as a Psych nurse.
Sonny and I have always attended a Baptist church where ever we have lived, and served the Lord to the best of our ability.
I have done genealogy since 1972 and compiled the book this program was taken from. I hope all who read it will have the family pride that I have.
Joyce Lavonne Steward Parrish, 26 May 1998

A poem written and sent by Kevin Fechtelkotter, from South Dakota, January 21, 2000
(a person that answered a poem I had sent out on the Internet.)

MY SPIRIT CRIES
My child, my child, how can you not see,
The great many gifts I have given to thee?
You walk, you sing, you build with your hands,
You run, you laugh, you travel upon the lands.
The great wonders of this world are yours to see,
Yet how often, my child, are you ever thankful of me?
The careless way you walk through the night,
Rarely considering my laws of wrong and right.
But still your joys bring happiness to me,
When you cry and are lonely, my heart breaks for thee.
Hear the mighty roar of the thunder and rain,
And know that your Master provides again.
Hail to the King, praise to the mighty God on high,
These are the sounds for which my heart cry.
My child, my child, come walk with me,
Before 'tis too late and never to be.
Come, my child, drift no more,
For it is I, the mighty King, who knocks at your door.

Maxine never "got around" to writing a story for my book. So I will tell you a little about her and her family.
Maxine was always the one who I looked to for information growing up. She always seemed to have the answers. Our parents had to work long hours on the farm to make a living, Maxine was the one that took care of us littler ones, cooked the meals, and did the dishes.
She could make us all laugh at the most embarrassing moments. I remember one day we were all stemming strawberries when a traveling salesman drove in. Our Mother was not happy about having to deal with him in the middle of the busy day. Maxine was sitting where she could see out the window, she begin a narrative of his movements, "He stopped the car. He opened the door. He got out of the car. He shut the door. He opened the gate. He closed the gate. He is walking up the sidewalk. He is starting to knock. And the girdle is coming around the stretch." Mother opened the door to the knock and stood there laughing. The poor salesman thought he had gotten to the "loony bin".
One day during blackberry time, we had all gone to pick wild blackberries. When we got home Maxine complained of itching. Mom pulled up her shirt to look, and there were millions of chiggers crawling on Maxine. She begin to jump and down and scream! Mom had to catch her to put medicine on her to kill them!
Maxine's room was always neat and her clothes done up perfectly. When she started off to high school, I would "find" something to wear to school. We had many arguments over this!
When she was a senior in high school, she met Pete Gordon. The night of the first date she was almost sick with nerves. She tried to get dad to meet him at the door and tell him she was sick. Dad wouldn't do it, so she finally got up the courage to go. Us kids made life miserable for her, we would sing "Here comes Peter Cottontail, hopping down the bunny trail".

Notes for POLLY ANN STEWARD:
Polly Ann could not read or write. It was believed that a girl didn't need any schooling and she waskept home to do house work. (This is most likely the reason she misspelled Ready on the pension form she filed to recieve her husbands pension in 1902, and also on his gravestone (spelled Reddy on the pension application and Readdy on Hiram's gravestone).

A story was told that she hid in the woods with her younger brothers and sisters when their home was ransacked and burned during the Civil War, probably saving all their lives.

In about 1917, she moved to Wyoming where her sons and her daughter, Mollie had moved.

About 1920, she became ill and it was discovered that she had cancer. She lived her final days at her daughter, Mollie's in Missouri Flats, near Thermopolis.

Notes for HIRAM READY:
Hiram served on the southern side in the Civil War, a Confederate. He told of hating to shoot as he might have a brother or cousins on the Union side. He was captured in short while and sent to a Union Army prison camp.

They let him out of prison if he promised to join the Union Army. He was sent out west to fight Indians in Nebraska. In the history books, Sioux Indians came down a road west of Fort Kearney, massacreing a force of Third Volunteers (Confederate prisoners who had enlisted in the Union Army to fight Indians) that had been sent out unarmed to work on the road. Hiram was in A Company, Second Regiment. Hiram was honorably discharged and was most likely mustered out in 1866.

He went home and married Polly Ann Steward in about 1867.

When Hiram died all he left his wife was farm near Jerico Springs. Polly Ann applied for a Widow's Pension and it began in 1902.
