" My great grandfather's brother James Edward Neely ( known as Ed Neely) married an Ivy Parrish. Not sure about NC Neely's. Let me tell you a little about Obediah Smith. He was born Oct 12, 1806 in Pulaski County, Ky. He died April 18,1863 during the Civil War. He is buried in the center of Hackleman Cemetery in Cedar County. He was an officer in the Black Hawk War having served under General Claiborne and Jackson. He helped found the Baptist religion in Cedar County. He was a representative to the state legislature when the question arose whether to sucede. On April 18,1863 a group of men wearing ragged blue uniforms approached the house and called him to come out. The men appreared to be a group of Federal Scouts so Obediah and his wife came out. Obediah took with him his rifle which was a far superior weapon for the time. After talking to them awhile one of the men asked to see his weapon. Still assuming they were Union troops he gladly complied. He realized too late they were Rebel Guerilla's; he was executed with his own weapon while standing next to his wife. Orville Dean STEWARD (photo) was born on 11 Sep 1940 in Chelsea, Faulk Co., SD. Orville was headed to Haiti with other missionaries when their plane went down while trying to make an emergency landing in the Bahamas. It struck a ridge about 11:00 PM CST Feb 3, 1998, a half-mile short of the airport at Exuma Island. Most of those aboard belonged to South Ridge Baptist Church in Conneaut, OH. The men from SD where from the Wesleyan Church in Redfield.
About 90 miles out of Exuma, the crew shut down a malfunctioning left engine and turned back to the airport. They were on a visual approach in stormy weather when the plane struck the ridge. Orville said that the pilot managed to get the craft back over land, but couldn't gain enough altitude to clear the ridge. They slowed to about 80 mph before crashing into the brush.
The impact severely damaged the plane's wings and engines, but the fuselage remained intact.
Orville said the folt from the crash wasn't as bad as he had expected, so God was definitely with them. It was raining so hard that they waited in the plane for two hours before getting out for help. One passenger from PA suffered a slight back injury and was glown to West Palm Beach for treatment.
After an overnight stay Orville and the others continued their journey to Haiti, where they were to build a latrine for an orphanage, drill wells and work on several other projects. Parents: Orville A . Douglas STEWARD and Althia Almeda FLINT.

My gggrandfather was Samuel P. Steward, b 1832. The 1900 Barton County MO census
says that his parents were from Tennessee. He married in Macoupin County Il,
which is only a hop, skip and a jump from St. Francois County MO. I suspect he is
the son of Samuel Steward (son of Andrew & Mary Steward).

Hi Lavonne -

Thanks so much for your emails. I've found a bunch of Stewards in SW MO that are
related to me. They are all from Vernon, Barton, Dade and Cedar Counties. I
still need to update my database with all of it, but when I get it done, I'll send
it to you. If I find a moment I'll extract what I have and send it.

The coincidence of finding two Samuel Stewards in SW MO makes me think there must
be a relationship and the dates work out for my Samuel P. to be the son of Jesse
F.'s brother Samuel. Also Samuel's brother Jesse had a son named Samuel Price
Steward. If they weren't related, you'd think the world was running short of
names. I note that my Samuel P. had a son named James.

My wife and I live in Tucson Arizona and have lived here over 20 years. I was
born in Texas and grew up in New Mexico. My memories of Amarillo are from my
childhood when we used to travel back and forth to Carthage MO. Carthage is where
my mother grew up. There were a bunch of Stewards in the Carthage area, descended
from my ggrandfather Charles Steward, son of Samuel P. Steward. Charles was a
photographer and owned the Steward Studio. I think the studio is still there but
was sold out of the family about 15 years ago. Interestingly enough there is
almost no one named Steward in Jasper CO now ... it seems that most of the
descendants were female. Anyway I remember the motels in Amarillo and the giant
rendition of a cowboy and steer in a small town south of Amarillo. And of course
I remember the heat. We survived without AC but I think were a little crabbier
then. I read an article this last summer quoting several old Texas
ranchers/cowboys (in their 80's and 90's) who said that the current breed of Texan
that lived in the Dallas area were a bunch of wimps complaining about the heat.
They said that they never thought much about the heat, wore long-sleeved shirts
and pants, which were soaked with sweat all day and acted like air conditioners.
I have mentioned that to a few Texan friends and find that they get a little
defensive about it. I guess they have a tradition to live up to. And then again,
maybe those old cowboys don't remember as well as they used to. My mother has
told me that during the Dust Bowl that they had a couple of weeks over 115 in
Carthage. They slept outside at night and acquired their first fan during that
time. (My mother still has the fan).

One thing I bemoan is the lack of written records from our families. Last year I
asked my mother and aunt (92 years old) to record their memoirs for me. My mother
gave me eight cassettes and my aunt one. I have yet to have them transcribed, but
look forward to reading it. I wish I had thought of that 25 years ago when so
many were still alive.

If you should find anything linking our Stewards please let me know, and I'll send
you my line.

Samuel Price STEWARD was born on 16 Jun 1863. He was buried in Dec 1955 in Spencer, Kolb Cemetery, OK. He died on 23 Dec 1955 in Spencer, Kolb Co., OK. The home that Samuel Price Steward and Vicey Smith Nail Steward lived in and had all their children was in Rolf, OK. Ed and Naomi McCoy later located where the house stood. The basement that was under the house was still there but the house burned after Samuel and Vicey moved to Bethany, OK. ( It is understood that John Steward lived in the house at that time and that John and Samuel had a misunderstanding and John left and never returned to this area.) After moving to Bethany, OK, Samuel helped to organize a petition to build Putnam City School. Being about the only one in the area to have a car, he took the petition around for all the signatures.
After the children grew up, he divorced Vicey and bought a farm in Spencer, OK. She moved there and lived there until she passed away.
Samuel married Belle Levescy McCoy and they bought a home in Oklahoma City. They lived there until Belle passed away. Samuel continued to live there until he was 85 years old when he went into a nursing home where he passed away at age 92.
