bullet George D. WEIR was born in 1844 in Jackson Co., OH. He died on 30 Nov 1864 in Spring Hill, TN. George D (possibly for deWint) was killed in the Civil War. He was the flag bearer. During the battle at Spring Hill he was mortally wounded. The Rebel soldiers tried to take the flag away from him. He rose, and was fighting them with the staff. The Rebel general rode up and called his men off, stating "this soldier is too brave to die like this". He then called George's unit over, telling them to carry him away. He died the next day in the hospital, with his flag beside him.

bullet Harriet Levina WEIR (photo) was born on 16 Aug 1851 in Jackson Co., OH. She was buried on 14 Jul 1939 in Central City Cemetery. The following is a story told by Harriet's family:

At the end of the Civil War, Benjamin Parks and a friend, Plummer Pierce, saddled their horses and headed out to explore the West. Their horses needed water one day and they rode into the farm yard of John Weir, Bates County, MO.
Harriet and her sister, Jane Ann were in the garden. The two girls looked the boys over, and it is said that Harriet told Jane Ann, "I get the dark headed one, you can have the one with red hair". And that is what happened. The two girls married the two boys! Their families appear here in this history. lsp

bullet John WEIR was born on 8 Dec 1811. John Weir states on the 1870 census record of Jackson Co., OH that he was born in Ohio. I believe this is in error and that he was born in PA. He died on 2 May 1895 in Amsterdam, Bates Co., MO. John Weir states on the 1870 census record of Jackson Co., OH that he was born in Ohio. I believe this is in error and that he was born in PA.
Mabel Harris, daughter-in-law of child # 7 (Ella), was a first grade pupil of John Weir. This writer and family, along with my sister Maxine and her family, visited with Mabel in Bates Co., Mo., 28 Nov 1969. She took us to the farm of John Weir. Where he raised his family and lived until his death in 1895. She also took us to the site of the school house. All that remained was the stone foundation. Mabel stated that John was short and wore a beard. He came to Bates Co., MO in 1866, just after the Civil War. He played a fife, at school, that he had played in the war. She said most of the young students were afraid of him as he would hide small snakes in his "bodice", then would pull them out to scare them.
We took a picnic lunch that day, and ate it in a small park that was part of the West Point Cemetery. Our families still tease us about this. My husband later learned, that the cemetery is known for rattlesnake dens. It was lucky that we were there in November, and too cold for them to be out.

The surname Weir, from the South and West of Scotland is a corruption of
the Gaelic name "McNuair". This has been confirmed from various separate
sources.
