Notes for B
ERNICE LAUREL MINDER:
Bernice Laurel Minder was the last born child of the Kenner and Cora (Bunce) Minder family. She was born on 25 August 1913 in Salem Township, Pierce County, Wisconsin. She lived her entire life in Pierce County. She attended the Salem School in Salem Township.

She and Hartzel lived and farmed in the beautiful Rush River Valley. It was always a treat to visit Aunt Bernice. The cookie jar was always full and the welcome mat was out.

Bernice had a large garden up until she moved from the farm. Her pies are well known, from family members to patrons of the Red Barn Cafe.

Pierce County Herald: Bernice Laurel Hase, Ellsworth, died Wednesday 20 November 1996, in the Trenton Township as the result of an automobile accident. She was 83. She lived in several places until moving to a farm on the Rush River near Maiden Rock in 1944. Hartzel died in 1992 and she moved to Ellsworth.

She is survived by one son, Fredrick "Mick" (Mary Lou) of Prescott; one daughter, Rhea (Robert) Heppner of Maiden Rock; 10 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter.

Preceding her in death were her husband, one son, one grandson, one brother and five sisters.

The funeral was Saturday at United Methodist Church in Ellsworth with the Rev. Janis Carole Best officiating. Burial was in Maiden Rock Cemetery. Winberg-McLaughlin Funeral Home, Ellsworth, handled arrangements.

Article from the Pierce County Herald--Bernice Hase and Ida Parmeter had developed a close friendhsip over the years while living in the Water Tower Apartments on North Maple Street, according to family members.

"If Bernice was not over watering Ida's violets when she went on vacation, they were at Bernice's watching Wheel of Fortune and Lawrence Welk most nights," a relative of Parmeter's said. "In the summertime, they coordinated their flowers in front of their apartments.

"Ida and Bernice most always attended the fish fry at Sonny's on Friday night and played cards with their friends. They enjoyed each other's company and, most importantly, looked after each other. Their friendship was more than just casual, they took care of each other."

But the two women, inseparable it seems, were killed last Wednesday when their vehicle slid on the snow covered road into the path of an oncoming truck just north of the Eisenhower Bridge in Red Wing.

It was about 12:25 p.m. when Bernice Hase, 83 and her neighbor and passenger, Ida M. Parmeter, 84, were driving Hase's 1989 Chevy Celebrity south on Highway 63, east of 825th Street. The two had reportedly gone to Red Wing in search of yarn. Hase lost control of the vehicle and struck a northbound truck driven by Richard W. Schommer, 39, Hager City.

Schommer, who was driving a 1995 Chevy truck, said he saw Hase's vehicle sliding toward him on the icy road. Schomer told deputies he veered to the right, but was unable to avoid the collision.

Hase's vehicle was hit on the front passenger's side. The impact sent her vehicle into the ditch, according to the accident report.

Hase and Parmeter, who were not wearing seat belts, were pronounced dead at the scene by Pierce County Coroner Dr. E.R. Jonas.

Schommer was not hurt in the accident, but his passenger, Wendy R. Schommer, 40, was taken by Red Wing Ambulance to St. John's Regional Health Center, where she was treated and released.

Red Wing ambulance, fire and police officials, Goodhue County Sheriff's deputies and Ellsworth ambulance personnel assisted at the scene.

Memorial to Bernice Hase on her birthday (August 1993)--Our memories are so vivid, and will never be earased. Our thoughts and love to you, will always be embraced. You enjoyed life and work you would never shun. Time for dancing, cards and parties, made it reason to be fun. Grandma was a good sport, and this we all did see. For on her 83rd birthday, a motorcycle ride did she. Grandma's kitchen is still flourishing at the Red Barn Cafe, she was a mentor to many and for this our thanks to her we pay. Her life's journey is now complete, her tasks were done with love, now she's resting with dear friend, Ida, in their beautiful mansion above. Our memories will always be filled with love, as we miss you so, Happy Birthday Mom, Grandma and friend.
