RANT ELI MINDER:
Grant Eli came into this world with the name Benjamin Eli Minder and somewhere along the way the name was mixed up. Grant thought for forty years that his name was Grant Eli.

The story, as told by his wife, goes like this: Years ago, during the Korean war, there was a security check of all who worked there so we had to furnish a birth certificate. I wrote to the Durand court house and ask for a birth certificate for Grant Eli Minder. They wrote back that there was no record of a Grant Eli Minder, born to those people that day, but there was a Benjuamin Eli born to them that day. So he had to have his name changed from Benjamin to Grant to make all our papers, deeds, etc. legal. I always teased him that he didn't know his own name till he was forty years old.

He died at the age of 85 in Elk River, Minnesota. And is burned in Anoka County, Minnesota at the Morningside Cemetery.

Notes for B
ESSIE MAY MINDER:
Bessie May Minder was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on December 19, 1912 to Benjamin and Otelia Minder. She was the first of six siblings. She was named after her two aunts on her father's side.

Early years were spent mostly in St. Paul, Minnesota, later moving to Wisconsin. By the time she graduated from the eighth grade, she had gone to thirteen different schools-that tells you the family moved often. Her father was a barber by trade and the three daughters were his advertisement (well-trimmed!). Her mother's sister had an only child so Bessie went to live with them in Illinois, and together they attended Broadview College and Academy. It was there she met and married her husband, Cornell Alexander Sabo on September 14, 1932.

While living in Chicago, Cornell had a paint store and a contracting business; and four children were born to Bessie and Cornell.

Medicine of some kind had priority for Cornell and his future plans; so 1943 found them heading west to California to get more schooling. Then they moved to Portland, Oregon, where Cornell practiced dentisty for 20 years and Bessis assisted him in the office. Also, Cornell and family spent two years in Germany where Cornell was a dentist (captin) in the U.S. Army. Cornell Jr. was also in the U.S. Army in the Medical Corps in Germany at the same time. While in Germany, the family did a lot of 3-day pass traveling to other countries.

Getting discharged from the military gave them time to get home and make more plans. The children were all married by now and a son-in-law who recently graduated from dental school took over the dental office in Medford in 1968. Cornell and Besssie were too young for the rocking chair so they took a mission appointment from the SDA Church. In 1973, they left the U.S. for a 2-year stint in Nigeria, West Africa. Bessie assisted Cornell in the dental clinic. For the nex 10 years, they did relief work in Bangladesh, Malawi, St. Kitts, and Guam. They also went around the word a couple of times. They sponsored a Chinese nurse to the U.S. and she is an asset to the Portland Adventist Hospital to this day.

Bessie and Cornell have been married for 65 years, have 11 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. Life has been good to them!

Bessie's interests and hobbies are making quilts, baby layettes and baby quilts for the unfortunate, sewing clothes for the grand-children and great-grandchildren, making doll clothes, picture albums, scrapbooks, plastic canvas, embroidery, gardening, and reading.

Notes for D
R. CORNELL ALEXANDER SABO, SR.:
Cornell Alexander Sabo was born on 3 November 1910 in Fogaras, Romania in Europe to Michael George and Mary (Copcea) Szabo. He was the sixth of eight children born to this couple. The "z" in the Sabo name was dropped when they came to the U.S. in 1919 giving it a much easier pronounciation. He married Bessie May Minder on 14 September 1932.

Cornell's father made several attempts to come to the United States. Finally leaving the family behind and posing as a business man, he gained passage on the ship going to the U.S. His suitcase was sent on ahead. He had no problem finding work as he was an accomplished cabinet maker.

World I then broke out. Contact with the family was unavailable. The oldest son had died and mother with six boys were alone doing their best with God's help to live until the war was over; and with the help of the Red Cross, mail came from father. The news that his family was alive and well made quick action on his part. Arrangements were made, tickets and passports were in hand; and Mother and the six boys were on their way to a better land. They arrived in New York the fall of 1919. They spent two weeks at Ellis Island, a motel-like building for immigrants. Can you imagine this mother with six boys ages 8 to 16 years staying in a motel until their sponsor, John Huenergardt, came to claim them and made arrangements to travel by train to Little Rock, Arkansas. Father was living in Little Rock and they knew he was anxiously waiting for them to arrive. "My dear ones," he said as the train stopped to unload. A small home was waiting for them on 10th Street where they lived for two years. All of the boys enrolled in church school to learn the English language. Father purchased a bakery, thereby giving the boys work. It was a successful endeavor which lasted about five years. It was time to make a move to be near a larger city and school to meet the needs of the family; so the family then moved to Chicago so the boys could attend Broadview Academy and College.

It was at Broadview College where Cornell met and married Bessie Minder in 1932. They have four children, Cornell Jr., Harriet, Judith and Carol.

Cornell and his brother Victor did painting and contracting and had their own paint store in Congress Park (Chicago) for about five years.

Being interested in the medical field, both Cornell and Victor decided to sell the paint store and go to Southern California where they finished requirements for predental and applied to the Oregon Dental School in Portland, Oregon. They were accepted and both graduated in 1947. Victor and his family moved to Southern California to practice dentistry and Cornell and his family moved to Southern Oregon. He practiced dentistry in Medford until Uncle Sam called him to go to Germany for two years, 1953 to 1955. They then came back to Medford, Oregon and Cornell resumed his practice until 1968 at which time his son-in-law took over the dental practice. Cornell was only 58 years old and too soon to retire so he and Bessie did a mission appointment from the Seventh-day Adventist church. He and Bessie went to Nigeria, Africa for a two year stint. Still not ready for the rocking chair, he did relief work for the next 10 years, going to Bangladesh, St. Kitts, Malawi and Guam, coming home in 1980.

Now he is enjoying their eleven grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. He makes small benches for a hobby and mows the lawn on his riding mower for exercise.
