Elsie Berniece Minder, the daughter of Benjamin and Otelia (Hagen) Minder, was born on 31 January 1918 in St. Paul, Minnesota. She lived in Minnesota, Wisconsin and then the family moved to Portland, Oregon in the mid-30's. Elsie goes by her middle name, Berniece. She was a stay at home mom for most of her life but did spend several years working in food service.

She had open-heart surgery in March of 1996 that gave her a new aortic valve and two bypasses. Unfortunately in December of 1996, she had a stroke that affected her cognitive abilities somewhat. She has difficulty with writing and working with numbers. Her speech is really affected when she is tired. Other than that she moves around well, still drives when she needs to run errands, attend church and goes to doctor's appointments.

RNEST RICHARD SAYLES:
Ernest Richard Sayles, son of Eugene Morse Sayles, was born, 1 July 1916 in Manistque, Michigan. His family moved to Portland, Oregon in 1928. Ernest and Berniece met at a church roller skating party. They were married on 10 September 1939. They resided in the Portland, Oregon area where Ernest did carpentry work. Their first child, Sandra Lee, was born on 7 January 1941. Second child, Douglas Allen was born on 9 July 1942. The family moved to Alaska in 1944 where Ernest worked in logging in the islands off Ketchikan and Wrangell. Youngest child, Gary Winton, was born on 3 January 1945 in Ketchikan, almost a birthday present for big sister, Sandra. Because of Sandra's health, her mother diagnosed her as havig rheumatic fever from a big green book called "The Modern Medical Counselor". The one doctor in the town of Wrangell agreed with her at one point when he was sober. He often drank with the local Indians and wasn't always available for medical needs. The Sayles were strongly advised to move from the damp, rainy climate back to the "lower 48" so Sandra could get well which is what they did in 1945. They settled in Vancouver, Washington, where Sandra started first grade and then moved to Portland in 1947. They lived in a large house that had two apartments and they occupied the upstairs apartment. In 1949, they bought a home on a large lot that had belonged to Berniece's parents. It was wonderful to have their own place and to have such a big yard in which the children could play. Ernest and Berniece lived there for 48 years, moving to a retirement center in the summer of 1997. Even though they do miss their yard, they do not miss all the work that is needed in keeping up an old house and a large yard.

Ernest worked as a carpenter until work related injuries took their toll. He then worked in maintenance for several years even into his 70's.

Ernest has been suffering from dementia and has good days and bad. He enjoys walking and takes a lot of walks every day.

Marriage Notes for E
LSIE MINDER and ERNEST SAYLES:
Ernest Richard Sayles, son of Eugene Morse and Emma Frances (Smith) Sayles, and Elsie Berniece Minder were married on 10 September 1939. They have three children, Sandra Lee, Douglas Allen and Gary Winton.

Ernest and Berniece celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Rochester, Minnesota. They preferred to just have their immediate family with them instead of a large party. But their children did something special that they really appreciated. The three children, their spouses and children, conducted the entire church service at the Rochester Seventh-day Adventist Church in August of 1989 as an honor to their parents. Ernest and Berniece were thrilled and the entire church family enjoyed it, too.

Notes for H
ENRY BENJAMIN PETERSON:

Henry Benjamin Peterson, the only child of Arnold and Bessie (Minder) Peterson, came into this world 30 July 1917 at the Henry Minder farm at Alpha, Wisconsin, Township of Wood River, Section 22, Burnett County.

Henry grew up on the BJ Peterson, later Arnold Peterson farm in Section 20 of Wood River Township, Burnett County, Wisconsin.

He attended the Midway School located on Highway 70 between Grantsburg and Alpha. Only went through the 8th grade with plans of going to a trade school but ended up taking a night school class in agriculture, given by the Grantsburg High School. From that he got into being a milk tester in Burnett County. Later was asked to work in Dunn County for three months doing the same work.

Returned home to help his father with the farm through the years of the early 1940's as his dad was having trouble with ulcers.

Became a member of a kitten ball team as a young boy and was asked to play the role of the catcher, with that opportunity to get his nose broken, which wasn't very hard to accomplish, as they did not wear masks at that time.

Henry took on a new occupatin as an Artificial Inseminator of dairy cattle which began a whole new series of other work in this same field, such as supervisor, public relations custom collection of semen from exotic bulls that had been shipped in from foreign countries. He worked a total of 29 years with cattle breeding.

While still on the farm with his dad, he spent all the spare time he could wiring with him, they did wiring for the REA around the home area, Trade Lake, Webster and eastern Burnett County doing school houses, churches, town halls and farms.

In 1976, Violet, his wife passed away. She was managing the Grantsburg Wards Store. Henry was soon to retire so he came home from Stwartville, Minnesota, where he was stationed while working with the Breeding Association and he ran the store until he sold it. Needing to keep busy he accepted a job working as a maintenance man in the Burnett County Hospital in Grantsburg.

After Violet died things just didn't seem right so he married again, the marriage only lasted four years. They lived in St. Paul and Henry did maintenance work for Brian Nelson, working on restoring old buildings, along with building picket fences around many of the homes that they restored.

When he and Georgeann parted Henry returned home to Grantsburg and married Jeanette (Erickson) Larson, an old friend of Violets. Jeanette had lost her husband some time ago. They had known each other for many years and were not strangers. Henry says that Jeanette knows more about him than he does himself.

Farming never got out of his blood and he still goes out to the farm to help with repairing machinery, driving tractor and doing odd jobs for Gary, to save him time.

Be assured that Henry hasn't let a lot of grass grow under his feet since retiring, he has been working on the Grantsburg Area Genealogy and the Minder Story for over 12 years, picking up information at Madison, River Falls, Burnett County Courthouse and other courthouses around the area for the information that has gone into the books that he has worked on.

While Violet was alive they made many trips so that their children could learn more about the country they lived in. After his marriage to Jeanette they have traveled to Arizona, Texas, Florida and three weeks in Sweden, so he has enjoyed life at its fullest. He thanks JESUS for EVERYTHING. AMEN.

Jeanette Mildred Erickson, the daughter of Frans Evald and Hilda Margarita (Anderson) Erickson, was born on 31 December 1917, at Falun, Wisconsin, Section 19, Daniels Township. She was the second child of this marriage, but was one of a family put together of half sisters and brother, which totaled eleven. Her mother was married before as well and she brought along four girls to this family.

She attended the Falun Grade school walking one and one-half miles each morning and night. She attended the Grantsburg High School for awhile-but then had a chance to work as a baby sitter for her half brothers and sisters at Superior, Wisconsin. She graduated from high school in Superior. To this day Jeanette likes to go shopping in Superior and to see her sister Edith Sutherland, the mother of Doug Sutherland of the Minnesota Vikings football team. The Purple People Eaters, under Bud Grant.

Jeanette loves to cook and house clean and does an outstanding job with both-no one leaves Jeanette's house hungry.

Jeanette and her first husband, Helmer, had a home in Arizona where they had lived during the winter months for twelve years. When she and Henry were first married they also stayed there, but Jeanette decided to sell the place so that they could travel instead of staying in just one place. They have traveled to such places as Florida, Texas and Sweden. She also owned a cabin at Big Wood Lake and she and Henry stay there in the summer months and go back into town, Grantsburg, for the winter. Jeanette loves to fish and has real good luck fishing off their pontoon in the lake.

Jeanette beongs to the Bethany Ladies Aid, during the winter months helps make quilts at the Church.

She was a big help to Henry while he was working on the Genealogy of the Grantsburg area. Working at the court house and cleaning off the tombstones so Henry could take pictures of them for the dates needed for his work.

She enjoys TNN country programs also watches one love story each week day. Loves to ride up through the Crex Meadows and watch the wild life, such as the baby geese and the swans that are coming back to that area.

All in all just a perfect wife, from Henry's point of view.
