Notes for S
ANDRA LEE SAYLES:
Sandra (Sandy) was born on 7 January 1941 in Portland, Oregon to Ernest and Berniece Sayles. She missed, by one day, being born on her twin uncle's birthday of 8 January. Warren and Wallace Minder were very disappointed.

She began her school years in Vancouver, Washington. Her mother had all intentions of her starting out in kindergarten but after three days refused to go anymore telling her mother that all the kids were babies and all they did was cry. Berniece took Sandy to the local church school operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church and that is where she started first grade at the age of five and a half. The teacher was stunned when Sandy arrived at shcool on her birthday all excited that she was now six years old! After their move to Portland, she attended Portland Union Academy grade school and graduated from the eighth grade in 1954. In 1955 and 1956 she attended Laurelwood Academy located about 30 miles west of Portland. It was a boarding school and she just loved it. So much in fact that her parents thought it best that she come home to go to Portland Union Academy her junior and seniors years from where she graduated in 1958. Actually it was a real financial drain on her parents to have sent her to that Academy. While attending school at home, she also worked as a secretary in the Clinical Laboratory at the Portland Adventist Hospital. She attended Walla Walla College for one year. The following year she knew she couldn't afford to go back.

Her aunt and uncle, Warren and Joanne Minder, offered to have her come to southern California to live with them, find work and help them with their four children. Warren had just graduated from college and was just starting his first teaching position. Her aunt was still working at her evening job. So with the consent of her parents she took off by bus for southern California. She found a job working as a medical transcriber for Riverside County Crippled Children Services. She worked there for four years and enjoyed it. She also took some night classes at San Bernardino Valley College.

During her employment in Riverside, she met Denny in Loma Linda where she had moved after a year and a half living with her aunt and uncle. They started dating the summer between his freshman and sophomore year in medical school. They had a fun filled summer with a group of young people. They became engaged that fall and planned a June wedding. It was a exciting time for them.

After their wedding on 23 June 1963, they had to drive straight back to California because Denny had to start his work that summer at a rehabilitation center the Wednesday after their Sunday evening wedding. So their honeymoon was delayed a whole year. The next summer they drove up to Oregon and came back the coast route. It was lovely! Sandy worked for the State Department of Medical Hygiene both in Los Angeles and Riverside those last two years of medical school.

They moved to Washington, D.C. area following graduation from medical school. They chose to go east for that year of internship to find out what the rest of the country was like especially since neither one of them had ever been east. She worked at Family and Child Services in Washington, D.C. That was a very unusual year of work but interesting too because of the people she got to know--VIP's in Washington who are very charity work minded. At one time, she was introduced to the then governor of Minnesota, Elmer Anderson, who was the guest speaker at a Northeastern Regional Workshop of psychiatric social workers, of which she was registration chairman. The President of the Board of Family and Child Services introduced her to the Governor as a future resident of the state of Minnesota since she would be moving there with her husband shortly.

They were quite shocked moving to Rochester, Minnesota. They had never lived in such a small town. It took 10 minutes to drive from one end to the other and than what do they do now? Sandy worked as a medical secretary in the section of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and resigned one month before their son, Brad, was born. They were really getting to love Rochester. When they left in July of 1970, they cried, not knowing if they would ever see the town they had grown to love so much again.

They spent two years living in San Antonio, Texas while Denny was getting his military obligation out of the way. Sandy enjoyed belonging to the Mothers of Twin's club while living there.
Their next home was in Darien, Illinois not far from Hinsdale, where Denny worked as a Clinical Pathologist at Hinsdale Sanitarium and Hospital. After three years, he received a phone call one day asking his interest in possibly returning to Mayo as a consultant in laboratory medicine. Needless to say, they accepted the position and moved back to their favorite small town in May of 1975, the day Brand finished first grade in Hinsdale. They have lived in Rochester since, moving just once to a larger place with land outside of town.
In 1988, Sandy went back to work outside the home to help with college expenses. She worked three fourths time in the Section of Engineering at Mayo Clinic. It was the second position in her life not working as a medical secretary, the first being in Washintgon, D.C. But her training came in handy many times when knowledge of terminology was needed in all the reports of repairs of medical equipment that she entered into the computer daily. She did all the data entry for their Section. She finally retired for the second time on 15 April 1997. She does volunteer work for their church. She has been doing the church bulletin weekly for several years and also takes care of recording tapes of weekly services for the shut-ins.

Her hobbies include: photography, reading, quilting and travel.

R. DENNIS ELVIN LEAVELLE:
Dr. Dennis Elvin Leavelle, son of Travis Godley and Sarah Viola (Moore) Leavelle was born on 21 May 1939 in Hemet, California. He was the third of three children born to this couple.

He moved around a bit with his family in the state of California and ended up near Fresno, California. He graduated from Fresno Union Academy in 1957 and attended college at La Sierra College (now University) with a B.A. in Chemistry in 1961. He attended medical school at Loma Linda University graduating in 1965 with his M.D.

The following year was spent on the east coast duing an internship at Washington Sanitarium and Hospital in Takoma Park, Maryland. The nex four years were spent in Rochester, Minnesota at Mayo clinic doing a four year residency in pathology. He was on the Berry Plan in the Armed Services which meant he had been deferred to do his residency and then would go into the military following that time. In August of 1970 he was a major in the Air Force assigned to Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Fresh out of residency he was put in as acting chief of clinical pathology of the laboratories at that huge hospital. In spite of the pressures, he was given the Air Force Commendation medal for all his efforts.

During those years in Rochester, they started their family. Son, Bradley Jon was born on 21 December 1967. Denny brought them home on Christmas Day and it was 20 degrees below zero outside. Not quite two years later, they were blessed with the addition of twin daughters, Becky Suzanne and Brenda Kaye, born on 9 November 1969.

Following military responsibilities, they accepted a position at a private hospital in Hinsdale, Illinois. Denny was asked to upgrade their clinical laboratory operation. They were there three years when Denny received a phone call from a friend at Mayo Clinic asking if he would be interested in working as a consultant in the Laboratory Medicine Department at Mayo Clinic. They moved back to Rochester in 1975 and have been there since. Denny is a clinical pathologist in Mayo Medical Laboratories.

Denny's hobbies include computers, reading, photography and travel.
