Thomas graduated from Bolsa Grande High School in 1978, where he was an outstanding baseball player, and a football quarterback for four years. He received numberous athletic awards.

He graduated from Cypress J.C. in 1980 and from Divers Institute of Technology in Seattle in 1982, where he graduated as a Deep Sea Diver, and Underwater Demolition Specialist. He worked for a few years in this area and then went into the aerospace field.

In 1988 he and Gayla lived in Laguna Niguel, California, where Tom was employed by Parker Hannafin Aerospace.
