bullet (Count) Henri II LORRAINE (Count of Lorraine)(1) was born in 1021 in Brabant, France.(5) Lorraine (family), titular name of an eminent ducal family that ruled in the province of Lorraine, northeastern France, from the latter part of the 11th century until 1740, when it united with the German royal house of Habsburg. Gérard d'Alsace (1048-70) was the founder of the line. The male succession descended without interruption to Charles II (1365-1431), who ruled as duke from 1391 to 1431. Charles stipulated in his will that the duchy of Lorraine should be transmitted to his daughter Isabella (1410?-53), wife of René I of Anjou. The will, however, was contested by force of arms by Antony of Vaudémont, Charles's nephew, who, at the Battle of Bulgnéville, took René prisoner; René's freedom was secured only on the payment of a large ransom. In 1444 Charles VII, king of France, consummated an agreement at Lorraine by the terms of which René's eldest daughter, Yolande, was married into the opposition Vaudémont family and Margaret of Anjou, René's second daughter, was married to Henry VI, king of England.
From René II (1451-1508), grandson of René I, the direct lineal succession passed through eight generations to Francis Stephen, later Holy Roman emperor as Francis I, who in 1736 married Maria Theresa, archduchess of Austria, daughter of Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI. Louis XV of France, seeking to prevent Lorraine from becoming a part of the Holy Roman Empire, formulated a plan by which the duchy of Tuscany was presented to Francis Stephen in return for Lorraine, and Lorraine was ceded to Louis XV's father-in-law, Stanislaw I Leszczynski, the dethroned king of Poland, with the understanding that at his death, Lorraine would pass to France. This agreement was ratified by the Treaty of Vienna on November 18, 1738. On the death of Stanislas in 1766 the province was incorporated into France.

In 839 Lothair received the eastern part of the empire in addition to Italy, which he had received in 822. After the death of Louis I, Lothair attempted to assert his power over his brothers, but he was defeated by them at Fontenoy, France, on June 25, 841. By the Treaty of Verdun (843), the title of Holy Roman emperor was guaranteed to Lothair, together with sovereignty over Italy, Bourgogne, Alsace, Lorraine, and the Low Countries. After having divided his kingdom among his three sons, Lothair retired to a monastery. His second son, sometimes called Lothair II, reigned from 855 to 869 over the kingdom of Lotharingia.
