bullet Margaret ANJOU(1) was born on 23 Mar 1429 in Pont-a-Mousson, Lorraine, France.(4) Margaret of Anjou (1430?-82), queen consort of Henry VI, king of England, a member of the house of Lancaster. Born in France, she was the daughter of René I, duke of Anjou, and was married to Henry in 1445 to confirm a truce between France and England during the Hundred Years' War (1337-1453). Margaret soon gained power over her weak-minded husband and through him ruled England. She was unpopular because of her autocratic reign and lost much support among the nobility to Richard Plantagenet, 3rd duke of York, who had a strong claim to the English crown.
The birth of Margaret's son, Edward, Prince of Wales, destroyed York's claim to the throne; in 1455 an armed struggle for power, the Wars of the Roses, began between the houses of Lancaster and York (see Roses, Wars of the). During the next 16 years Margaret used the financial and military assets of the Lancastrians to ensure the succession of her son. By 1461 she was forced to go to France to seek financial aid. Although her forces temporarily gained ascendancy, in 1471 the Yorkists triumphed at Tewkesbury and Margaret's son was killed. Richard's son was crowned as King Edward IV, and Margaret was imprisoned. She was ransomed by Louis XI of France, after agreeing to surrender her French possessions to him.

bullet (Duke) Rene I d' ANJOU (Titular King)(1) was born about 1418.(4) Lorraine (family), titular name of an eminent ducal family that ruled in the province of Lorraine, northeastern France, from the latter part of the 11th century until 1740, when it united with the German royal house of Habsburg. Gérard d'Alsace (1048-70) was the founder of the line. The male succession descended without interruption to Charles II (1365-1431), who ruled as duke from 1391 to 1431. Charles stipulated in his will that the duchy of Lorraine should be transmitted to his daughter Isabella (1410?-53), wife of René I of Anjou. The will, however, was contested by force of arms by Antony of Vaudémont, Charles's nephew, who, at the Battle of Bulgnéville, took René prisoner; René's freedom was secured only on the payment of a large ransom. In 1444 Charles VII, king of France, consummated an agreement at Lorraine by the terms of which René's eldest daughter, Yolande, was married into the opposition Vaudémont family and Margaret of Anjou, René's second daughter, was married to Henry VI, king of England.
From René II (1451-1508), grandson of René I, the direct lineal succession passed through eight generations to Francis Stephen, later Holy Roman emperor as Francis I, who in 1736 married Maria Theresa, archduchess of Austria, daughter of Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI. Louis XV of France, seeking to prevent Lorraine from becoming a part of the Holy Roman Empire, formulated a plan by which the duchy of Tuscany was presented to Francis Stephen in return for Lorraine, and Lorraine was ceded to Louis XV's father-in-law, Stanislaw I Leszczynski, the dethroned king of Poland, with the understanding that at his death, Lorraine would pass to France. This agreement was ratified by the Treaty of Vienna on November 18, 1738. On the death of Stanislas in 1766 the province was incorporated into France.

bullet (Queen) ANNE(1) was born on 6 Feb 1665 in St. James' Palace.(4) Stuart, royal family of England and Scotland. The line originated with a Breton emigrant, Alan Fitzflaald, who died about 1114, a follower of the Norman conqueror who became the English king William I. Fitzflaald's grandson Walter, who died in 1177, was appointed high steward to the Scottish king David I. From the 12th to the 14th century the stewardship descended from father to son; the hereditary title became a surname that later was modified to Steuart or Stuart. From 1371 to 1714, 14 Stuarts in succession ruled Scotland, the last six of these ruling also in England.
When, as a result of the so-called Glorious Revolution (1688), James II of England and Ireland, also known as James VII of Scotland, was exiled on the issue of his Roman Catholicism, he was replaced by his Protestant daughter, Mary II. Mary ruled jointly with her husband, William III, from 1689 until her death in 1694. William then ruled alone until 1702. The last sovereign of the house of Stuart was Queen Anne, second daughter of James II, who reigned from 1702 to 1714 and in 1707, after the Act of Union in which England and Scotland were united into a single nation, became the first ruler of Great Britain. In 1701 Parliament had passed the Act of Settlement, which excluded Roman Catholics, and thus the male line of the house of Stuart, from the throne. In accordance with the act, when Queen Anne died without heir, the succession passed to the German house of Hannover, beginning with King George I.
