bulletRobert De BRUCE I(1) was born before 1066 in Normandy, France.(4) Bruce, Scottish family, originally named de Bruce, descended from Robert de Bruce I (died about 1094). De Bruce was a Norman knight from Bruis, a castle near Cherbourg, France, who in 1066 went to England with William the Conqueror. Robert de Bruce II (1078?-1141), son of Robert de Bruce I, was a companion in arms of Prince David of Scotland, afterward King David I, from whom he received a grant of the lordship of Annandale (now in the region of Dumfries and Galloway). The English estates of Robert de Bruce II were inherited by his eldest son, whose male line terminated in Peter Bruce (died 1271), constable of Scarborough. Annandale passed to the second son, Robert de Bruce III (d. 1189?), who is considered the founder of the Scottish branch of the family. He had two sons: Robert de Bruce IV (d. 1191?), who in 1183 married a daughter of William the Lion, king of Scotland; and William de Bruce (flourished 1191), whose son Robert de Bruce V (d. 1245) married a niece of William the Lion, thus laying the foundations for the claim of the house of Bruce to the Scottish throne. The son of Robert de Bruce V, Robert de Bruce VI (1210-95), called The Competitor, vied unsuccessfully for the Scottish throne with John de Baliol. The son of Robert de Bruce VI, Robert de Bruce VII, earl of Carrick (1253-1304), paid homage to Edward I, king of England. In 1306 the son of Robert de Bruce VII, Robert de Bruce VIII, usually known as Robert Bruce, became king of Scotland as Robert I. The Scottish throne passed to his son, David Bruce, known as King David II; he died without an heir. David's nephew, also the grandson of King Robert I, ascended to the Scottish throne as Robert II and founded the Stuart house of kings of England and Scotland.

bullet Robert "the Competitor" De BRUCE VI(1) was born.(4) Baliol, John de (1250?-1314), king of Scotland (1292-96), son of John de Baliol, an English nobleman. When Princess Margaret died, he became a competitor for the crown then claimed by Robert de Bruce VI, grandfather of King Robert I (see Bruce, Robert). Edward I of England was the arbiter in the dispute, and he chose in favor of Baliol, who in turn pledged his fealty to Edward. Feeling that his sovereignty was only nominal and resenting various indignities to which he was subjected, Baliol in 1295 concluded an alliance with France, which was at war with England. The English then invaded Scotland, defeated the Scottish troops, took Baliol prisoner, and forced him to surrender his crown on July 10, 1296. The name is also spelled Balliol.

bullet (King)(Robert I) Robert BRUCE VIII (King of Scotland)(1) was born about 1274.(4) Bruce, Robert (1274-1329), liberator, and, as Robert I, king of Scotland (1306-29). He was originally named Robert de Bruce, and to distinguish him from his father and grandfather, who had the same name, he is often referred to as Robert de Bruce VIII. He is also called Robert the Bruce. As earl of Carrick he paid homage to King Edward I of England, who, in 1296, defeated King John de Baliol and thereafter refused to acknowledge another king of Scotland. Bruce later abandoned Edward's cause and joined other Scottish leaders in taking up arms for the independence of his country. In 1299, the year after the Scottish patriot Sir William Wallace was defeated by Edward at Falkirk, Bruce, then still in favor with Edward, was made one of the four regents who ruled the kingdom in the name of Baliol. In 1305 he was one of those consulted in the decision to make Scotland a province of England. In 1306 he met an old enemy, the Scottish patriot John Comyn, who was the nephew of Baliol; a quarrel occurred, and Bruce stabbed Comyn. Bruce proclaimed his right to the throne, and on March 27, 1306, he was crowned king at Scone.
Bruce was deposed, however, in 1307 by Edward's army and forced to flee to the highlands and then to the little island of Rathlin on the coast of Antrim (now in Northern Ireland). In his absence all his estates were confiscated, and he and his followers were excommunicated. He continued to recruit followers, however, and in less than two years he wrested nearly all of Scotland from the English. Bruce again defeated the English in 1314 in the Battle of Bannockburn (see Bannockburn, Battle of), twice invaded England, and in 1323 concluded with King Edward II of England a truce for 13 years. After the accession of King Edward III in 1327, war again broke out, and the Scots won again. In 1328 they secured a treaty recognizing the independence of Scotland and the right of Bruce to the throne.
In his later years Bruce was stricken with leprosy and lived in seclusion at Cardross Castle, on the northern shore of the Firth of Clyde, where he died. He was succeeded by his son, David II. Bruce's nephew, Robert II, who succeeded David, was the first king of the Stuart house of English and Scottish royalty.

Bannockburn, Battle of, historic battle between Scottish and English armies, fought near Bannockburn, Scotland, on June 24, 1314, during the Scottish war of independence against England. The battle began when the Scottish forces, numbering about 40,000 troops under the command of Robert Bruce, king of Scotland, intercepted an army of about 60,000 commanded by King Edward II of England. The English forces were en route to the relief of a besieged English stronghold, Stirling Castle. After inconclusive skirmishing between patrols of the two armies, the English launched a mass attack, led by cavalry, on the Scottish positions. Bruce, however, had prepared the ground before his lines with a series of deep, camouflaged pits. The mounted English troops blundered into the pits and were slain by Scottish pikemen. In the fighting that followed, the English army was decisively defeated, losing an estimated 10,000 men. The Battle of Bannockburn is considered the victory by which Scottish independence was won. However, England did not recognize Bruce on the throne as Robert I and grant full independence to Scotland until 1328.
