31. Doctor Edward Brooks PEIRSON was born on 22 Jan 1820 in Salem, MA. He entered Harvard College in 1836 and graduated in 1840. As the son of an eminent physician and surgeon, he was predisposed to the medical profession. He entered Harvard Medical School in 1840 and while pursuing his studies there, was appointed an Assistant at the Hospital. He received his MD from Harvard in 1844.

In due course, Edward Brooks returned to Salem and lived and practiced medicine at 13 Barton Square, next to Abel Lawrence Peirson's house at 11 Barton Square. 13 Barton Square now houses at least four apartments, while 11 has been torn down and low cost/public housing built on the site.

Upon the early death of his father, nearly the whole of his extensive practice came to Edward Brooks and greatly expanded his practice, especially in the area of surgery. On October 1, 1874, the first hospital in Salem opened at 13 Charter Street with 12 beds. (in 1873 there were only 178 hospitals in the United States). Edward B. Peirson was an Attending Surgeon on the first Medical Staff.

He died on 19 Nov 1874 in Salem, MA. about six weeks after the hospital was opened. Although his health had been poor for many months previously, he had returned from a summer vacation in the White Mountains of New Hampshire feeling in such a state of restored health thet he was again fully engaged in the practice of his profession. He was buried in Harmony Cemetery, Salem, MA.

He was married to Catherine Pickman SALTONSTALL on 28 Apr 1846 in Salem, MA. Catherine Pickman SALTONSTALL was born on 18 May 1823 in Salem, MA. She was the daughter of Dr Nathaniel & Caroline Saltonstall of Salem. She died on 21 Jun 1852 in Salem, MA. Doctor Edward Brooks PEIRSON and Catherine Pickman SALTONSTALL had the following children:

He was married to Ellen Elizabeth PERRY (daughter of General Justus PERRY and Hannah WOOD) on 9 Oct 1856 in Keene, NH. The Perry family was from Marlborough, NH and moved to Keene, Hannah Wood was from Concord, MA. Ellen Elizabeth PERRY was born on 16 Jun 1828 in Keene, NH. She died on 16 Oct 1903 in Topsfield, MA. She was buried in Harmony Cemetery, Salem, MA. Doctor Edward Brooks PEIRSON and Ellen Elizabeth PERRY had the following children:

child40 i. Katharine Saltenstall PEIRSON was born on 8 Oct 1857 in Salem, MA. On 9 Dec 1889, in Salem, MA, she married the Reverend William H. Ramsey of the 2nd Church in Salem. They lived in Salem, MA, Wellesley Hills, MA, Louisville, KY. and Cornwall on Hudson, NY. They had one child:

child41 ii. Margaret White PEIRSON was born on 30 Dec 1858 in Salem, MA. On 10 Jul 1879, in Salem, MA she married Dr. Maurice Howe Richardson (b. 31 Dec 1851, d. 31 Jul 1912), a graduate of Harvard College in 1873 and Medical School in 1877 and a Professor of Surgery there. They lived at 224 Beacon St in Boston and later at 617 Boylston St. in Brookline, MA. Their grand son Elliot Richardson served as the Attorney General of the United States, Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare, Secretary of Defense, Secretary of Commerce, and as the United States Ambassador to the Court of St. James. Elliot served under presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Carter. Margaret Peirson and Maurice Richardson had six children -- all born in Boston except as noted:
Dr. Edward Peirson (b. 7 Apr 1881) Harvard AB 1902 & MD 1906. m. on 26 May 1917 Clara Lee Shattuck. They had children: Edward Jr., Elliot, and George S.;
Mary Tuckerman (b. 31 Dec 1882) m. in 1907 Robert Walcott. They had children Molly, Maurice, and Robert Jr.;
Maurice Howe, Jr (b. 20 Sept 1886) Harvard AB 1909. 1st Lt and Capt in France 1918-19 during WW l. He had children (wife's name unknown): Maurice Jr., and Shelia;
Dr. Henry (Harry) Barber (b. 19 Mar 1889) Harvard AB 1910 & MD 1914. m. on 1 May 1916 Margaret S. Carpenter. They had children: Henry/Harry Jr., Margaret, and Neil;
Margaret (b. 28 May 1892) m. Gracie Hall Roosevelt (brother of Eleanor Roosevelt). they had 3 children. She m. 2nd John Cutter.;
Dr. Wyman (b. 3 Aug 1896 in Marion, MA, d. 1953). Harvard AB 1917. 2nd Lt. 1917-1919, in France during WWI and wounded in action. m. in Aug 1922 Charlotte Richardson. He taught at the Harvard Medical School. Ill health forced his early retirement and he returned to his other passion, writting a series of essays for the Atlantic Monthly that were later published as a book "The House on Nauset Marsh." Wyman and Charlotte had children: Wyman, Charlotte, Fred, and Margaret Peirson.
child42 iii. Ellen Perry PEIRSON was born on 11 Oct 1860 in Salem, MA. On 17 Oct 1888, in Salem, MA, she Married Frank Weston Benson, (b. 24 Mar 1862, d. 17 Nov 1951 -- both in Salem, MA) Frank Benson was an artist noted for his wildfowl etchings, drypoints and washes as well as his "impressionist style" paintings. They lived first at 77 Lafayette St. and later at 14 Chestnut St., both in Salem and had four children:
Eleanor Perry (b. 30 Jan 1890) m. __ Lawson;
George Emory (b. 9 Jul 1891);
Elizabeth (b. 29 Nov 1892);
Slyvia Perry (b. 5 Feb 1898). She died about 1951 in Salem, MA.

child44 v. Horatio Perry PEIRSON was born on 13 Apr 1865 in Salem, MA. On 27 Apr 1895, in Salem, MA, he married Sarah Augusta Safford. They lived in his grandfather's house at 11 Barton Square in Salem, MA. They had no children. He died in 1917.
