I am researching my family history back from my parents, Raymond S Pettit (b 26 May 1903), and my mother Margaret Rose Fitzgerald (b 9 October 1911). My grandmother Carrie Dodd Noon (b 26 Jan 1884)is from another old Oceanside family, and her mother, my great grandmother Emma Jane Blauvelt (b 18 Oct 1862) is from a Dutch family and is researched in the Blauvelt Descendants'back through 1623.

From what I've found so far, the available Pettit family history in begins in Ardevora, Philleigh, Cornwall, England with the birth of John Petit in 1362. His descendents stay in England until Thomas Pettit(b.1609) and John Pettit(b.1608), born in Widford, Essex, England depart for America. They arrived in Massachusetts (reportedly on the Talbot) in 1629 through 1636. Thomas was indentured to Oliver Mellowes (a merchant in England),and eventually married Christian Mellowes, Oliver's daughter. Thomas became involved in the Puritan's controversy of faith (similar to Anne Hutchinson) and left the Massachusett's Bay area, along with others, and and became part of the group that formed the Exeter Republic (NH). He was the head of the local militia, signed various documents concerning the incorporation of the Exeter settlement into the Massachusetts colony, transactions supporting enlisting a minister to serve the community, etc.

He stayd in Exeter NH until approximately 1659 when he and others moved to the Newtown section of Queens county, New York City (near the Whitestone Bridge),and he is listed as one of the founders of the Presbyterian Church in that community. Thomas died in the Newtown area and in 1688. At the time that portion of Queens county included the area now known as Nassau County (which was broken out as a separate County around 1800).

The Pettit family lived in the Hempstead Township area, which included Hempstead, Freeport and Christian Hook (the latter ultimately became the unincorporated area of Oceanside), New York. In the 1600's the name of the area was Christian Hook, then changed to Oceanville, and finally becoming Oceanside.

Aside from references to Thomas in "Annals of Newtown" there are references to several other direct descendents Pettit's, the next being Joseph Pettit, who along with Jeremiah Wood, (Constable and clerke) certify to a Census of the Town of Hempstead dated 31 August 1698, with the Pettit's listed being Joseph Pettit, Margreat Pettit, Sarah Pettit, Martha Pettit, Joseph Pettit Jr., Mary Pettit and John Pettit.

Another branch of the family tree involves Nathaniel Pettit, listed as a son of Thomas Pettit who purchased a farm in the area of Trenton, NJ which is currently the site of the NJ state capital buildings. He sold that farm and moved into the Somerset, NJ area. Still others moved into Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Iowa, Indiana and beyond.

Charles Pettit (1736 - 1806) was a delegate from Pennsylvania held several positions, including being a member of the Continental Congress from 1785-1787.

There are several references to Pettit's during the Revolution, however, most were for the King and the Hempstead area was a very heavily Tory area. Much of that sentiment changed when the British troops located into the area and proceeded to treat the locals as though they were rebels. Increase Pettit is listed in one article as saving a rebel who was being chased by British troops. He let the rebel get in his boat and rowed him to safety and the startled British troops looked rather than fire on them. However, there are also reports of Pettit's being part of the Queens Militia and capturing rebels and turning them into the British prisons.

During the war of 1812, Brig. Gen Pettit was in charge of militia stationed at Plattsburgh, NY, which was defending the "Canada Line" against British troops in Canada.

John Pettit was a Democrat member of the US House and Senate serving from 1843 -1854, John Upfold Pettit Republican served in US House from 1855 - 18
