4. It is told by Floyd G. Key in a letter dated 1968 that Sarah Jane Holden's mother was a full blood Cherokee Indian. He stated that she drew a Confederate pension as long as she lived. In the letter he stated, soon after the war, a bunch of people near Raleigh NC where she lived, migrated to Alabama. She loaded her children and what she had in an ox wagon and joined the wagon train. She said they were a long time on the way and at one place where they camped near an Indian village, a drunk Indian came to camp and got in a fight with one of the men who had to kill him in self defense. She said he killed him with a scale weight. We used to call them stillard weights or peas. They broke camp at once expecting the Indians to come after them but for some reason they did not. Floyd stated that he thought this happened in Georgia. They finally reached Alabama, several died on the way, luckily she and hers made it and she first stopped in Tuscaloosa county. Later she moved to Walker county where they homestead 160 acres. Some her children were old enough to homestead and also around her. That was near what is now known as Hat Church north of Good Springs. After her children were married off, she sold her place and came to live with us (Floyd) until my mother died, when she went and lived with Aunt Jane who was her youngest daughter and her husband Dr. Jiles Jones. She lived with them until her death. She was 98 years old at her death.
