THOMAS HAMPTON SR. (son of WILLIAM HAMPTON SR. and JOANNE HOTTEN) was born April 16, 1623 in Elizabeth City Co. Va., and died 1690 in James City Co. Va..
Notes for THOMAS HAMPTON SR.:
Rev. Thomas Hampton was the rector of the church at Jamestown, Va. in 1630. He matriculated at New College, Oxford 3/11/1625 at age of sixteen and said to be son of Rev. William Hampton of Reigate, Surry, England, who was son Thomas Hampton, gent. of Kingston, Surry, who may have been the Thomas Hampton who subscribed L25, as charter member of the Virginia Company.
Armes: Gules, a fesse, chequy, argent and sable within a bordure or. From Bishop Meade's Old Churches of Va.
1644. Thomas Hampton was minister of James City parish. His tomb stone is near Williamsburg marked. The Rev. Thomas Hampton, Rector of this parish in 1647. His land which was considerable, was behind the church adjoining land of Mrs. Mary Wade. (I have no further information of Mrs. Mary Wade; but it is interesting to see the association of the names Wade and Hampton so early.)
4/6/1653--Rev. Thomas Hampton Jr. patented 550 acres in New Kent. 3/8/1658 --400 acres in James City County. 10/10/1658 --Mr. Thomas Hampton, clerk (Minister) 700 acres in New Kent to include original 550 acres. 10/21/1668 Rev. Mr. Hampton officiated at marriage of Peter Field end Judith Randolph at Chicahominy. The following genealogy is taken from an article entitled "The Famous Hampton Family" published in the "State" of Columbia, S.C. and on file in the library of the University of S. C.
So many records have been destroyed that it cannot be proven but seems highly probable. Rev. Thomas Hampton, rector James City Church as late as 1647, had son, Rev. Thomas Jr., who had two sons, John and Thomas. To John he left his property in King William County and the Isle of Wight land to Thomas. It is from John that the Wade Hampton and Gayle Hampton families of South Carolina descended. Both branches settled near Columbia, S. C. John Hampton of King William County had son John b. 1690 d. 1748, who had sons, Thomas, who lived in Caroline Co., Richard in Fauqujer Co. and John in Halifax Co. From The Venturers: - Gen 12. Thomas Hampton, born 16 Apr 1623 accord. to family bible, became Rev. of Wilmington Par. James City and York-Hampton Parish 1649. Continued until 1690. (NOTE: he was not the son of the Rev. Thos. Hampton of Kecoughtan Par., Kent Island, who patented land in & moved to Nansemond 1637, died 1646. Relationship not known.) Patented 550 acres on Tyascon Branch 1653 east of Chickahominy toward Timber swamp. Land in New Kent. Additional 400 acres land on Tyascun [sic] Creek in James City in 1658. Land now along Chickahominy and Diascund. By 1658 he was minister of Wilmington Par. Last entry in his Bible were he kept daily notes on sermons is 12 Oct 1690. issue: John (marr. 1.
